Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant engineering field.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience leading design and construction management of multiple disciplines.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Tennessee.
  • Experience developing piping systems designs, including pipe sizing, pump selection, and pumping system controls.
  • Experience working with Operations and coordinating field systems tie-ins in a co-occupancy environment involving Operations, construction contractors, and vendors.
  • Ability to create, organize, and manage project documents from conception through completion, including storing closeout and as-built documentation in site database systems.
Responsibilities
  • Manage multiple design and construction projects simultaneously within scope, schedule, budget, and available funding, from conception through turnover to operations.
  • Develop project definitions, scopes of work, methods of accomplishment, and project baseline forecasts, including schedules and cost or spending profiles.
  • Identify staff and other resource requirements and communicate them to resource managers.
  • Develop, review, and approve design documents, change orders, material requisitions, and specifications for construction and procurement use.
  • Conduct periodic project and customer or stakeholder meetings to promote communication, review progress and performance, discuss issues, and facilitate problem resolution.
  • Develop Mechanical Systems scopes of work for assigned projects and support project teams in achieving required results.
  • Review architectural engineering and construction contractor proposals for alignment with project scope and objectives.
  • Identify potential design issues, including cost overruns, quality concerns, and code compliance issues, and resolve them promptly to avoid project schedule impacts.
  • Coordinate technical issue resolution with the design team, Design and Project Management, and other appropriate parties.
  • Conduct design reviews to ensure drawings, specifications, data sheets, cost estimates, and other documents align with scope and meet project objectives.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience performing constructability reviews, options analysis, and conceptual engineering to address construction conditions not anticipated during project design.
  • Experience coordinating design and construction work in the field and in sensitive research facility settings, including energy plants, utility rooms, and research laboratory spaces.
  • Site utility systems design experience, including communications, electrical, mechanical, potable water, sanitary sewer, steam, and storm water.
  • OSHA 30 Construction Safety.
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and participate in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.
