- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Food Handlers Certification is required where mandated by state law.
- Provide leadership through communication, interpersonal, people-management, customer-relations, employee-relations, analysis, order-planning, judgment, and business-activity response skills.
- Conduct visual inspections and read reports and computer screens.
- Perform safe and quick movements; operate related equipment with manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Perform basic arithmetic and compute weights and measures.
- Perform supervisory tasks such as interviewing, scheduling, hiring, counseling, training, and disciplining.
- Frequently reach, lift, and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 50 pounds.
- Perform repetitive arm movements for slicing, cutting, and preparing products for display.
- Stand for long periods; walk and move rapidly; bend, twist, and turn frequently.
- Work around heat-emitting machinery or in cold conditions.
- Remain mentally alert to potential hazards involving procedures, equipment, and work aids.
- Learn product taste, content, and perishability, as well as safety and sanitation procedures and department policies.
- Understand state and federal regulations, including COOL legislation as it relates to seafood.
- Perform primary duties efficiently and accurately.
Responsibilities
- Direct and control Fresh Foods Department operations, including food displays, back rooms, and production areas, by understanding related work areas, supervising department personnel, ordering merchandise, and ensuring customer service, product quality, freshness, and selection.
- Coordinate and manage department operations to control costs, meet targeted labor, maintain projected profit margins, and meet or exceed sales goals.
- Supervise employees by motivating and training them, participating in hiring, monitoring performance, recommending personnel actions including hiring, firing, layoffs, and discipline, scheduling staff according to coverage needs and service levels, and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
- Maintain and encourage an atmosphere of fast, friendly, and courteous customer service.
- Perform customer-relations duties and use suggestive selling and other sales techniques.
- Meet departmental sales and gross-margin objectives by creating promotional and seasonal displays, overseeing cost and quality control, preventing shrink, and controlling expenses.
- Ensure adequate product quantity, quality, and freshness by ordering, checking, receiving, and controlling inventory; preventing the sale of outdated products; taking periodic inventories; computing gross profit; processing administrative paperwork; maintaining accurate department records; preparing and cooking food items; and announcing in-store advertisements over the intercom.
- Organize and maintain required record keeping, including COOL records.
- Reconcile invoice pricing totals with retail pricing guides, scale files, and case tags, and notify the manager of discrepancies.
- Maintain current product information books and complete knowledge of products available for sale, including species knowledge, storage and handling techniques, and cooking and preparation techniques.
- Perform all duties and responsibilities with honesty and integrity.
- Meet targeted labor goals.
- Ensure proper department coverage for lunches and breaks as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
