Requirements
  • 7–10+ years in cloud financial management, FinOps, engineering strategy, or a similar role combining technical and financial decision-making, including direct leadership of a small technical or analytical team.
  • Proven ownership of a function or program end-to-end, including vision, roadmap, stakeholders, and outcomes, with experience influencing VP-, C-level, CFO, or Finance leaders on data-backed investment decisions.
  • Familiarity with public cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform and their major cost drivers, sufficient to partner with capacity, platform, and architecture leads on trade-offs.
  • Experience building or maturing a FinOps or cloud cost practice, including Showback, Cost to Serve, or optimization programs, and familiarity with cost-management tools such as FinOut, Cloudability, native cloud billing, and modern data stacks for financial and operational reporting.
Responsibilities
  • Define and evolve the FinOps/Cloud Cost & Capacity Engineering vision, scope, success metrics, and ways of working with engineering and finance.
  • Set and maintain the roadmap for forecasting, tracking, and optimizing cloud cost and capacity, aligning it with company and platform strategy.
  • Own FinOps outcomes including forecast accuracy, spend predictability, optimization impact, and the quality of leadership conversations.
  • Define how FinOps is presented in senior forums so cloud-spend discussions focus on clear decisions and trade-offs.
  • Develop a point of view on cloud-spend drivers, risks, and opportunities.
  • Translate usage, cost, and capacity signals from compute, data platforms, artificial intelligence tooling, observability, and content delivery networks into concise narratives for executives, mission leads, and finance partners.
  • Lead executive materials such as slide narratives, single-slide summaries, and monthly or quarterly readouts explaining spend, drivers, and recommended actions.
  • Own cloud-forecasting methodologies, assumptions, tolerance bands, and governance across missions and platforms.
  • Partner with Finance and mission leadership on annual and multi-year cloud planning, connecting forecasted spend with growth drivers, capacity assumptions, and planned investments.
  • Drive scenario modeling for new initiatives and evolving projects, providing positions on cost impacts, trade-offs, and budget needs.
  • Shape and participate in investment reviews, including return-on-investment gates, budget intake, and contract renewals, recommending what should be funded, re-scoped, or delayed.
  • Design methods to track forecast variance and explain it to executives.
  • Serve as the strategic liaison among Engineering, Product, Finance, and Procurement on cloud spend, savings, and growth.
  • Establish recurring monthly cost reviews and quarterly deep dives to hold teams accountable.
  • Work with platform and capacity engineering partners to translate FinOps insights into architectural decisions, guardrails, and optimization work.
  • Build shared mental models of spend drivers and their causes so leadership conversations focus on trade-offs and priorities.
  • Directly manage and develop the cross-functional Cloud Cost & Capacity Engineering team, including analysts, capacity engineers, and program partners.
  • Own and evolve the FinOps tool stack, including FinOut and related data pipelines, to deliver trusted, decision-ready views.
  • Promote cost awareness and financial accountability across engineering through training, documentation, office hours, and embedded engagements.
  • Partner with data and platform teams on advanced modeling while retaining end-to-end accountability for FinOps frameworks, insights, and communication.
  • Support and understand the company’s value of journalistic independence and commitment to its mission.
  • Work limited on-call hours as determined by the on-call schedule.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services and/or Google Cloud Platform architecture and pricing models.
  • Experience managing or advising on costs for artificial intelligence and machine learning platforms, data warehouses such as BigQuery, and observability tools such as Datadog at scale.
  • Experience in media, subscription, or other consumer products at scale.

Bolt CEO defends firing entire HR team as EEOC chair backs discrimination lawsuit against NYT

Bolt CEO Ryan Breslow sparked controversy at the Fortune Workplace Innovation Summit by revealing he fired his entire HR team, claiming they "created problems that didn't exist". The comments came one month after laying off roughly 30% of staff and amid reports of equity-for-salary arrangements and unpaid contractors, which Breslow denied. The summit also featured Andrea Lucas, chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, defending her agency's lawsuit against The New York Times for allegedly discriminating against a white male editor. Lucas rejected suggestions the case was politically motivated, stating "civil rights should be for everyone". Other summit discussions focused on AI's potential to reshape up to 50% of work hours within five years, according to McKinsey, alongside workplace culture topics including four-day workweeks and pay transparency.
