Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two years of experience working in a reprocessing or sterilization department are required.
  • Certification as a CRCST through the International Association of Healthcare Sterile Materials Management (IAHCSMM) or as a CSPDT through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) is required.
  • Complete organization-, unit-, and job-specific competencies within a reasonable orientation period.
  • Read, interpret, and apply surgical schedules, sterilizer printouts, instructions for use, policies, procedures, and other written communications.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally in person, by telephone, or through the intercom system.
  • Accurately perform basic mathematical operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
  • Use email, instrument-tracking programs, computer-based learning applications, electronic medical records, and internet searches.
  • Apply knowledge of surgical instrumentation, medical terminology, human anatomy, microbiology, sterilization and disinfection practices, and aseptic technique.
  • Apply and troubleshoot technical aspects of the position, including using hand-eye coordination, color differentiation, body mechanics, hearing comprehension, and manual dexterity; routinely lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift, push, pull, or move bulky or awkward items weighing up to 50 pounds; and operate cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, assembly, inspection, and sterilization equipment.
  • Rotate to all areas of the Sterile Processing/Central Services Department.
  • Provide technical support as needed to areas that process reusable items using sterilization or high-level disinfection, such as Endoscopy and Labor and Delivery.
  • Set priorities and manage stressful situations and multiple tasks calmly and professionally.
  • Provide consistent customer service to stakeholders.
  • Manage confidential and sensitive information, including knowledge of HIPAA and other applicable regulations and laws.
  • Serve as a preceptor for new employees and act as a resource for Sterile Processing or Operating Room customers.
  • Act as a team leader when needed.
  • Demonstrate a positive work attitude.
  • Ensure processed items have been appropriately disinfected or sterilized and are safe for patient care.
  • Demonstrate critical-thinking skills to recognize, identify, and respond to issues throughout the shift to ensure safe patient care.
  • Receive, handle, and process contaminated reusable medical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Accurately inspect, test, and prepare basic surgical instrumentation for sterilization.
  • Use sterilization and high-level disinfection methods and follow their safety processes.
  • Properly store and distribute sterile instrumentation, supplies, equipment, case carts, exchange carts, and other items.
  • Conduct accurate inventory, establish par levels, and restock areas as required.
  • Receive materials, instruments, and tissue according to established protocols.
  • Monitor dated materials to ensure expired items are removed from inventory and appropriately credited.
  • Use computer systems to complete work responsibilities.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Accurately document work tasks and related activities, including continuing education credits as required.
  • Participate in continuing education, staff meetings, and in-service education related to the position and compliance with hospital, Joint Commission, and other regulatory or accrediting agencies.
  • Assume responsibility for personal and professional growth and development.
  • Communicate and collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure continuity and coordination of services; identify potential equipment or instrumentation conflicts and identify and resolve basic issues during the shift.
  • Participate in department quality and process-improvement teams.
  • Act as a resource for department team members and Operating Room staff.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Responsibilities
  • Decontaminate, assemble, sterilize, store, and dispense surgical instrumentation.
  • Identify disposable items needed for surgical cases and use critical thinking to respond to the needs of the Operating Room and other clinical areas.
  • Work cooperatively with all levels of staff in surgery and follow Reprocessing Department policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate competencies specific to the population served when providing direct patient care.
  • Perform technical duties under frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines, including operating or maintaining full attention to a personal computer or CRT for up to 40 percent of the time.
