Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • Meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Hold all applicable state licenses and complete required education and training.
  • Successfully complete the organization's dialysis training program and CPR certification for continued employment.
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital or related facility is preferred.
  • Pass the Ishihara Color Blindness Test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered if needed.
  • Perform frequent, prolonged standing; bend over; lift and lower solutions up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 40 pounds occasionally; and assist with heavy patient lifting and movement.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and various community locations, with possible travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis health care team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines, including conducting pretreatment alarm testing and initiating the Solution Delivery System.
  • Educate patients about dialysis adequacy measures, the disease process, vascular access, treatment options, and home dialysis under appropriate supervision.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer delegated heparin where permitted, and monitor arterial and venous pressures.
  • Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluations, and treatment parameters.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures.
  • Calculate and enter ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling into dialysis machine programming.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, monitor patient responses, perform prescribed interventions, and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Enable and check required machine safety alarms, observe patients, and report unusual findings.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests; collect, label, prepare, store, and coordinate transport of laboratory specimens.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and environmentally appropriate treatment area and immediately clean blood spills with approved disinfectant.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment; order and maintain inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Complete treatment sheets, progress notes, patient charts, laboratory requisitions, clinical application entries, and other required records accurately and promptly.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure required nursing signatures and corrections are completed.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities, infection-control audits, process-improvement activities, and patient-satisfaction initiatives.
  • Follow infection-control policies and reinforce infection-control education for patients, families, staff, and applicable direct patient-care personnel under appropriate supervision.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff to schedule disciplines according to the patient's care plan and support transition to the patient's chosen dialysis modality.
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the Transitional Care Unit, including demonstrating peritoneal dialysis setup.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient-care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Report treatment information, patient-condition changes, unusual findings, and intervention responses to the registered nurse or supervisor.
