Requirements
  • Membership in the California State Bar Association and a license to practice in all state courts.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state, federal, and municipal codes, laws, and ordinances, particularly civil and criminal laws; legal processes and courtroom and jury trial techniques; and administrative methods related to District Attorney's Office activities.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively when preparing and presenting assigned legal cases.
  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment and tact when dealing with court officials, juries, law enforcement agencies, and other governmental agencies.
  • Submit a cover letter, resume, official or unofficial law school transcript, writing sample, and references with the application.
  • Provide at least three professional references from former or current employers with firsthand knowledge of performance in a legal position, including each reference's full name, current telephone number, and email address.
Responsibilities
  • Try jury and bench criminal cases and litigate evidentiary and other hearings in the San Francisco Superior Court.
  • Represent the People of the State of California through court appearances and written petitions, motions, appeals, and other court documents, including preparing those documents using word processing and database management.
  • Pursue justice through fair and ethical prosecution practices while respecting the humanity and dignity of victims, witnesses, and defendants.
  • Interview witnesses; conduct or supervise investigations; and write legal briefs for assigned cases and trials.
  • Prepare the daily court calendar and maintain records of warrants and citations issued.
  • Maintain case files, record work-product status accurately, file memoranda on case dispositions, run law-enforcement database checks on criminal backgrounds such as rap sheets, and transport relevant files or materials to court.
  • Receive and investigate complaints from the public and police-department representatives to determine whether citations or warrants should be issued.
  • Interview witnesses, issue citations, conduct citation hearings, and determine whether warrants should be issued.
  • Research legal issues related to the prosecution of criminal cases.
  • Represent the District Attorney before law-enforcement agencies, community-based organizations, and neighborhood or citizen meetings.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
