Requirements
  • Hold current Texas Nursing Assistant Certification or written documentation from the state examiner that certification requirements have been met.
  • Successfully complete competency evaluation requirements under state guidelines.
  • Have effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Promote a courteous, calm atmosphere and work cooperatively with healthcare professionals and other departments.
  • Demonstrate age-appropriate knowledge of growth and development to assist the licensed nurse in collecting data.
  • Know and implement infection-control and universal-precaution practices.
  • Interpret and explain menus, answer or refer questions, coordinate meal service, and understand requests.
  • Lift more than 100 pounds, move and transfer residents, and perform physical tasks including bending, stooping, crouching, walking, pushing, pulling, and climbing at least eight flights of stairs.
  • Meet the physical demands of the position, which are frequently extreme, while maintaining personal and resident safety.
  • Work safely with potential bloodborne and airborne pathogens and tolerate disagreeable odors.
  • Have all five senses intact or correctable to acceptable levels and be mentally alert.
Responsibilities
  • Support and nurture residents’ physical and mental health.
  • Bathe residents as scheduled and provide other necessary personal care.
  • Record medication and personal care provided on the Daily Care Record.
  • Report relevant changes to the Charge Nurse.
  • Use and submit charge sheets daily.
  • Perform duties for which the appropriate training level has been achieved and other duties assigned by the supervisor.
  • Make rounds with the off-going shift and hourly to ensure residents are clean and comfortable and to ascertain their overall condition.
  • Lift, turn, and transfer residents as needed using proper safety equipment.
  • Distribute fresh ice water to each resident.
  • Assist residents with feeding and ensure food is appropriately portioned.
  • Clear dishes from tables during and after meal service and maintain safe, sanitary dining-area conditions.
  • Attend server training on proper meal-service procedures and assigned in-service training and education sessions.
  • Apply skills learned in training to enhance job performance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Be certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR—Healthcare Provider).
