Requirements
  • A master's degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health-related field or social work is required.
  • A valid unrestricted independent counseling license is required, such as LCSW-C, LCMFT, LCPC, or psychologist licensure.
  • At least one year of post-licensure clinical experience is required.
  • Intermediate-level competency with Microsoft Suite, internet navigation, smartphone or tablet applications, and video-conferencing platforms is required.
  • The counselor must be able to engage and communicate with military members or children, respond quickly to emergent situations, and work across indoor, outdoor, rugged, uneven, and varied physical environments.
  • The counselor must comply with site-specific military installation requirements, including immunization or vaccination requirements when applicable.
  • U.S. citizenship and fluent English are required.
  • The counselor must be able to develop trusting helping relationships and work effectively with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • The counselor must pass a National Agency Check and Inquiries clearance, Installation Records Check, criminal history background check, and FBI fingerprints check; some units additionally require a Secret clearance.
  • A valid U.S. state vehicle operator's license is required unless waived, and a U.S. military vehicle operator's permit may be required for temporary-duty locations.
Responsibilities
  • Provide non-medical, short-term, solution-focused, walk-around counseling to eligible service members and family members at assigned military-unit locations.
  • Provide assessment, brief counseling, consultation, action planning, referrals to resources, and follow-up as indicated.
  • Deliver training and health and wellness presentations and activities as requested or directed.
  • Enter counselor activity data daily through a smartphone or web application while maintaining client and service-member confidentiality.
  • Cultivate and maintain direct relationships with commanders and personnel within the assigned military unit.
  • Develop effective professional working relationships with the installation point of contact, command, and command point of contact.
  • Maintain visibility within the assigned brigade or regiment to make MFLC services accessible.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with community resources and military populations.
  • Partner with the point of contact to provide MFLC services that address brigade or regiment needs while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Respond to critical incidents, surge needs, and special requests as directed and approved by the program manager, including flexing the schedule for urgent requests.
  • Manage duty-to-warn and restricted-reporting situations according to Department of Defense protocol and staff cases with regional leadership.
  • Communicate with regional supervisors and participate in regular individual and group supervision, sharing information about installation trends and issues.
  • Participate in regular in-service training, Quality Improvement committees, and other contract activities as assigned.
  • Participate in initiatives, studies, and pilot programs, including certification and training processes, activity documentation, integration of pilot activities into non-medical counseling work, and use of applicable technology.
