Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Meet one of the following qualifications: nationally certified patient care technician; completion of the WVUM Patient Care Technician program; or current state-issued Certified Nursing Assistant certification through the applicable Ohio or West Virginia registry.
  • Work requires strength and/or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking.
  • Work involves close interaction with others, irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
  • Effectively communicate with staff and patients.
  • Adapt to changing environments.
Responsibilities
  • Observe and immediately report patient concerns or changes in condition to a registered nurse.
  • Assist the registered nurse with patient admission, transfer, discharge, and general patient-care duties.
  • Record vital signs, assist with personal hygiene and patient comfort measures, and record oral intake and output.
  • Assist with specimen collection and other activities for assigned patients.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment to help prevent or control infections and protect patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Report necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel according to departmental procedure.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.
  • Communicate with the registered nurse about nutrition issues, including poor appetite or lack of understanding of diet changes.
  • Assist the department with administrative tasks supporting department operations.
  • Answer patient call bells and relay messages to appropriate personnel.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation requirements when applicable.
