About the job

Requirements
  • Have 5 or more years of experience in software engineering, applied artificial intelligence, solutions architecture, technical implementation, or another role involving significant production engineering and customer ownership.
  • Be able to independently design and ship production-quality software across multiple parts of the stack.
  • Be fluent in Python, TypeScript, or comparable modern languages and comfortable working with application programming interfaces, databases, cloud infrastructure, data pipelines, and modern web applications.
  • Have built or deployed production artificial intelligence systems using language models, retrieval systems, agentic workflows, tool calling, evaluations, or related technologies.
  • Understand that production artificial intelligence requires rigorous data, evaluation, observability, security, and user-experience work, not just prompt engineering.
  • Be able to understand unfamiliar institutions, workflows, data environments, or mission areas and translate them into coherent technical systems.
  • Have experience integrating software with complex enterprise systems, fragmented data sources, identity infrastructure, and legacy technology.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with senior executives, government leaders, security teams, engineers, and operators.
  • Be comfortable taking ownership of loosely defined problems through discovery, development, deployment, and adoption.
  • Make sound technical tradeoffs under time pressure while maintaining security, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Write clear technical requirements, deployment plans, documentation, decision records, and customer communications.
  • Be highly organized and able to manage multiple technical workstreams, stakeholders, dependencies, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Be willing to spend meaningful time with customers, including working on-site during critical deployment phases.
  • Be comfortable traveling domestically and internationally, sometimes on short notice and for extended deployment periods.
  • Be prepared to work in person with a small team and flex beyond standard business hours when customer needs, travel, or deployment milestones require it.
Responsibilities
  • Work directly with customer leaders, operators, technical teams, and end users to understand objectives, workflows, data, constraints, and measures of success.
  • Identify underlying operational problems beyond stated feature requests and determine what system should be built.
  • Map environments across people, processes, data sources, existing software, decision rights, security requirements, and organizational dependencies.
  • Translate ambiguous mission and business needs into technical requirements, deployment plans, system architectures, milestones, and ownership.
  • Design solutions combining Proxi capabilities with customer-specific data, integrations, workflows, interfaces, and decision-support requirements.
  • Establish definitions of success for deployments, including technical performance, user adoption, operational outcomes, and maintainability.
  • Identify technical, security, data, adoption, and organizational risks and develop plans to address them.
  • Own deployments from discovery and technical scoping through architecture, development, testing, go-live, adoption, and expansion.
  • Configure and extend Proxi for customer missions, organizational structures, information environments, and operating workflows.
  • Build production-quality applications, services, integrations, data pipelines, internal tools, and user experiences.
  • Ingest and normalize structured and unstructured data from customer systems, public sources, document repositories, application programming interfaces, databases, and other environments.
  • Integrate Helios systems with enterprise and government technology, including identity providers, data platforms, document systems, application programming interfaces, and legacy infrastructure.
  • Design and implement workflows for search, retrieval, analysis, monitoring, alerting, reporting, and human review.
  • Build and evaluate artificial intelligence agents that reason across complex information environments while maintaining source provenance, traceability, and human control.
  • Build across the application stack, including backend services, data infrastructure, artificial intelligence orchestration, application programming interfaces, and customer-facing interfaces.
  • Develop retrieval, ranking, reasoning, and agentic workflows over customer and public-sector information.
  • Design data models, ontologies, and knowledge structures reflecting customer missions and organizations.
  • Build evaluation frameworks measuring accuracy, reliability, relevance, latency, and user value.
  • Implement safeguards for hallucination, weak sourcing, improper tool use, and other production artificial intelligence failure modes.
  • Improve performance through data pipelines, retrieval strategies, prompts, tools, models, and product workflows.
  • Monitor deployed systems, investigate failures, and resolve performance issues.
  • Design deployments for sensitive, regulated, and high-stakes environments.
  • Work with customer security, privacy, legal, compliance, and information technology teams to move deployments from review to production.
  • Implement controls for identity, permissions, data access, encryption, auditability, logging, retention, and system monitoring.
  • Adapt architectures to requirements around data residency, network access, cloud infrastructure, and deployment environments.
  • Produce technical documentation, system diagrams, data-flow descriptions, security materials, and implementation plans.
  • Ensure prototypes and pilots have a path to secure, maintainable, production-scale systems.
  • Serve as a trusted technical counterpart to government officials, agency technology leaders, enterprise executives, security teams, engineers, analysts, and users.
  • Lead technical discovery sessions, architecture reviews, implementation workshops, demonstrations, testing sessions, and deployment updates.
  • Explain technical decisions clearly to non-technical stakeholders while communicating risks and tradeoffs.
  • Maintain visibility into issues, dependencies, milestones, decisions, owners, and next actions across deployments.
  • Stay close to users after go-live and address adoption barriers and emerging requirements.
  • Coordinate with product, engineering, customer success, and company leadership to deliver realistic commitments.
  • Support technical discovery and solution design during prospective customer engagements.
  • Translate repeated customer needs into reusable product features, application programming interfaces, data models, connectors, deployment patterns, and internal tools.
  • Distinguish reusable product capabilities from customer-specific requirements.
  • Bring structured field insights into product and engineering decisions using deployment and user-behavior evidence.
  • Build infrastructure that makes successive deployments faster, safer, and more repeatable.
  • Create deployment templates, testing frameworks, technical documentation, implementation playbooks, and reusable components.
  • Reduce bespoke work required to deliver sophisticated systems.
  • Help define how applied intelligence engineering works with product, engineering, customer success, security, and commercial teams.
  • Contribute to the core Proxi platform when field requirements should become permanent capabilities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience as an applied artificial intelligence engineer, customer-facing product engineer, solutions architect, technical lead, or early engineering hire at a high-growth technology company.
  • Experience deploying software within the U.S. government, defense and national security community, international institutions, or highly regulated industries.
  • Experience delivering production systems to Fortune 50 or similarly complex global enterprises.
  • Familiarity with government security, acquisition, authorization, and deployment processes.
  • Experience with NIST controls, CMMC, FedRAMP, ISO 27001, SOC 2, data-sovereignty requirements, or comparable security frameworks.
  • Experience building knowledge graphs, ontologies, semantic search, retrieval systems, or large-scale document intelligence platforms.
  • Experience with enterprise identity and access systems, including SSO, SAML, OIDC, role-based access control, and audit logging.
  • Experience deploying systems in private-cloud, customer-controlled, limited-connectivity, or otherwise constrained environments.
  • Familiarity with multilingual data, international deployments, or systems operating across multiple legal and regulatory environments.
  • Experience building software for policy, regulation, government affairs, public-sector procurement, national security, public health, or other institutionally complex domains.
  • An active U.S. government security clearance or eligibility to obtain one.
