Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Identify, handle, and accession patient samples requiring laboratory testing.
  • Transport specimens and communicate test results timely and accurately.
  • Maintain required laboratory files and logs in a neat and accurate manner.
  • Perform specimen processing, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels according to protocol and rotate previous stock when applicable.
  • Participate in performance improvement processes for the department.
  • Maintain the assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations.
  • Generate patient reports and forward them to the proper departments or physicians.
  • Investigate and respond to inquiries or problems related to referral testing, resolve issues involving improper or inadequate samples, and answer specimen-requirement questions from physicians or patient unit personnel.
  • Check packing slips, verify received item counts, document receipts, and provide a copy to the supervisor or designee.
  • Serve as a lead or backup when the supervisor is unavailable.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
  • Register internal and external patient consult cases in One-Click and UChart, including primary reads, second opinions, and personal cases sent for second opinions.
  • Perform grossing for internal, external, and personal consult cases.
  • Communicate with outside facilities to resolve missing information, documentation, and requisition discrepancies.
  • Obtain payment information and process payments for self-pay and international consult cases.
  • Maintain documentation of processed and received payments.
  • Place orders in CoPath for recuts of patient material when only a block is received for consultation.
  • Process One-Click requisitions for Histology, Cytology, Core Lab, and UMMG Clinic cases.
  • Process technical work-only cases.
  • Prepare patient cases for testing and analysis.
  • Evaluate collected data to confirm accuracy.
  • Upload original patient material to CoPath and UChart.
  • Review patient and clinician requests to ensure required documentation is received.
  • Manage designated folders in the Pathology Main Inbox.
  • Receive, sort, and track international and external cases received by FedEx and other carriers.
  • Return patient materials, including slides and blocks, to originating facilities promptly.
  • Assist patients, clients, and visitors.
  • Maintain a pending list of problem cases.
  • Answer multiple incoming lines and triage questions from outside facilities and clinicians.
  • Assist customers with requested information and resolve pathologist-related issues.
  • Maintain a log of client specimens sent for additional testing, tumor boards, second opinions, and research.
