PENN Entertainment to hold groundbreaking for new hotel at Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway.

PENN Entertainment to hold groundbreaking for new hotel at Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway. Set to open in 2028, the hotel will have 140 rooms and will be connected to the west entrance of Hollywood Casino. Kansas Entertainment, a joint venture between PENN Entertainment and NASCAR, will host a groundbreaking ceremony today for a new boutique hotel adjacent to Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway. The hotel will be affiliated with the Tribute Portfolio, part of Marriott Bonvoy, and will be financed, developed, and operated by Prime Group US and Shaner Hotels, with Kansas Entertainment contributing vacant land for the project. Expected to open in 2028, the hotel will have approximately 140 rooms and suites and will be connected to the west entrance of Hollywood Casino. Additional details, such as food and beverage offerings, meeting space options, and other amenities will be announced at a later date. "This is an exciting new addition to our operations in Kansas City," said Jay Snowden, CEO and President of PENN Entertainment. "Significant developments are in process in the area surrounding our property, and this is another organic growth opportunity that aligns with our disciplined approach to further our competitive position in our markets across the country." Located in the Village West area of Kansas City in Wyandotte County, Kansas, Hollywood Casino sits on turn two of the Kansas Speedway, which currently hosts NASCAR races, including the Hollywood Casino 400, and dozens of major events annually. Village West also includes Children's Mercy Park, home of Major League Soccer's Sporting KC, and numerous large-scale shopping outlets and attractions. In addition, travel center giant Buc-ee's is currently developing one of its properties adjacent to Hollywood Casino, and the National Football League's Kansas City Chiefs are expected to open their new stadium in Village West in 2031. "This will be an incredible addition to the Village West entertainment district and furthers Kansas Entertainment's commitment to economic development in Wyandotte County," said Pat Warren, President of Kansas Speedway. "PENN Entertainment has been a fantastic partner and we can't wait to welcome visitors to the new hotel, where they'll have convenient access to the casino, speedway, and all that the area has to offer." Area dignitaries and local stakeholders are expected to be in attendance at the ceremonial event, including representatives from the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission, Kansas Lottery, and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, among others. Prime Group US, a privately held real estate investment, development, and management firm based in South Florida, is financing and developing the project. The hotel will be operated by State College, Pennsylvania-based Shaner Hotels, one of the foremost owner-operator companies in the hospitality industry with more than $1 billion invested in 75 hotel properties owned and managed across the U.S., Italy and the Bahamas.

Is PENN Entertainment (PENN) stock a buy after its latest multi-million dollar bet?

Is PENN Entertainment (PENN) stock a buy after its latest multi-million dollar bet? Published September 23, 2026 at 7:00 am EDT Analyzing a gaming and entertainment operator requires looking past headline-grabbing project announcements to examine underlying cash generation, portfolio compounding, and capital allocation discipline. PENN Entertainment (NASDAQ:PENN) has spent recent periods restructuring its debt profile, improving operating margins, and refining its regional asset footprint to focus on higher-return landside venues. While the company has made measurable progress in deleveraging and expanding its property-level cash flows, its long-term equity value ultimately depends on balancing heavy multi-year capital expenditures with the path to profitability in its digital division. Assessing whether the current valuation presents a buying opportunity requires weighing these fundamental improvements against persistent execution risks. PENN's strategy to upgrade its regional portfolio advanced on August 17 when the company announced plans to spend roughly $195 million tearing down one of its own casinos to build a new one next door, following strong second-quarter financial results reported earlier in the month on August 6. The project relocates the Boomtown Casino & Hotel New Orleans riverboat to a landside site in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, reopening it as Hollywood Casino New Orleans. Whether this capital-intensive relocation fits into a disciplined growth strategy or strains liquidity is the key question for investors examining the stock. A playbook that keeps working. The New Orleans project marks PENN's fourth landside relocation initiative, following Hollywood Casino Aurora and Hollywood Casino Joliet in Illinois, both of which opened in June 2026, with Hollywood Casino Council Bluffs in Iowa slated for 2028. Management frames this as disciplined capital allocation, backed by a financial profile that is increasingly capable of supporting reinvestment. PENN swung to net income of $32.6 million in the second quarter, reversing an $18.3 million loss a year earlier, while Consolidated Adjusted EBITDA climbed $52.5 million year over year to $312.6 million. Nine properties achieved second-quarter records for revenue and Adjusted EBITDAR, and the Retail segment generated $1.5 billion in revenue at a robust 34.4% margin. On the balance sheet, PENN retired the remaining $106.7 million of its 2.75% convertible notes in May, removing roughly 4.6 million potentially dilutive shares, and refinanced credit facilities to push maturities out to 2031 and 2033. Traditional net leverage improved from 4.5x to 2.9x, while the lease-adjusted figure declined from 6.8x to 5.9x, pointing to a structurally leaner operating model. The bill comes due long before the payoff. Despite these operational gains, the capital commitment introduces notable timing and cash-flow risks. Hollywood Casino New Orleans is not scheduled to open until 2029 and still requires approvals from the Louisiana Gaming Control Board and the Jefferson Parish Council. This means PENN is tying up $195 million in cash for a non-revenue-generating asset over several years, running concurrently with capital outlays for Council Bluffs. Furthermore, the balance sheet remains heavily leveraged, carrying $2.8 billion in traditional debt against $887.2 million in cash as of June 30. The Interactive segment also continues to operate at a loss, posting a $9.5 million Adjusted EBITDA deficit during the quarter despite a $185.5 million tax gross-up included in its $349.4 million of revenue. With general and administrative expenses rising to $441 million from $410.3 million a year earlier, the company is stacking multi-year capital commitments on top of a digital division that has yet to prove sustainable profitability. Cheap stock, skeptical market. Market participants remain visibly divided over PENN's risk-reward profile. The stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 8.53, as of September 22, a modest multiple for a business demonstrating EBITDA growth and shrinking leverage. However, institutional sentiment leans cautious: hedge fund ownership dropped from 54 to 41 funds in the most recent quarter, indicating portfolio trimming despite better earnings reports. At the same time, short interest sits at an elevated 14.85% of the float, reflecting structured, deliberate skepticism from market bears rather than routine hedging. This disconnect between a discounted valuation multiple and heavy institutional caution shows that investors are waiting for proof that long-term capital projects will pay off. What comes next depends on execution. PENN currently presents two competing narratives: a traditional retail gaming business that is expanding margins and reducing debt, paired with ambitious real estate relocations and an unprofitable digital segment. For the bulls, successful execution on prior landside conversions and eventual profitability in Interactive will justify the capital spend. For the bears, a substantial debt load and multi-year payback windows demand tighter risk management. Upcoming quarterly results will determine which thesis ultimately prevails.

After 30 years: $200M Hollywood Casino to replace riverboat facility in Iowa.

After 30 years: $200M Hollywood Casino to replace riverboat facility in Iowa. September 16, 2026 Key Points * PENN Entertainment has started construction on the new Hollywood Casino in Council Bluffs * The project is expected to cost between $180 million and $200 million and open in 2028 * The development will replace the existing Ameristar riverboat and add restaurants and parking A new Hollywood Casino is coming to Council Bluffs, Iowa, with PENN Entertainment breaking ground on a project that will replace the aging Ameristar riverboat casino and add several new amenities to the property. Investment of up to $200 million. The development is expected to cost between $180 million and $200 million and is currently scheduled to open in 2028. The new casino will be, therefore, built as a replacement for the existing riverboat facility on the Missouri River across from Omaha, giving the Council Bluffs property a significantly different layout and appearance. The project will also include a parking garage and several new restaurants. Hollywood Council Bluffs General Manager Paul Czak said the new complex will have a more modern feel than the current property. PENN Entertainment chief executive officer and president Jay Snowden commented on the event: "We are thrilled to be celebrating yet another transition from riverboat gaming to a new best-in-class entertainment destination." The groundbreaking took place on September 14, bringing together representatives from PENN, local officials and community organizations. Among those attending were Council Bluffs Mayor Jill Shudak, Penn Entertainment Senior Vice President of Regional Operations Aaron Rosenthal, and Iowa West Foundation President and CEO Brenda Mainwaring. Focus on casino with 1,000 slot machines and 25 live game tables. The development will transform a property that has been part of the Council Bluffs casino market for years. Penn will replace the existing Ameristar riverboat with a new land-based venue designed around updated casino, dining, and amenities for patrons. The casino will, as expected, represent the centerpiece of the new complex, making room for the first Shake Shack in the Omaha metropolitan area, while a fast-casual Asian restaurant called Red Lotus is also planned as part of the development. The land-based casino will have more than 1,000 slot machines and 25 live dealer table games. It will be connected to the existing 160-room hotel and the property's other amenities, including The Sportsbook Restaurant and Bar, 1853 Bistro and Steakhouse, Club 38 VIP Lounge, and the Buffet. Penn Entertainment said the project is expected to create around 450 construction jobs and add 50 permanent positions to the casino's current workforce of more than 500 employees. Construction is expected to take between 18 and 24 months. The project is also being supported financially by PENN's landlord, Gaming and Leisure Properties, which has agreed to provide up to $150 million in financing at a capped interest rate of 7.1%. PENN can repay the financing through part of its rent obligations or use a five-year loan that can be paid off early without a penalty. The Hawkeye State officially legalized casino gambling at brick-and-mortar venues in 2007, three years after the state's decision to amend the 1989 riverboat law to enable commercial gambling on permanently moored barges. Of a total of 19 commercial casinos in the state, only Lakeside Hotel Casino and Ameristar are based on land, with the rest representing riverboat casinos. Iowa is also getting ready to usher in another land-based facility, Cedar Crossing Casino, in November.

New $200 million Council Bluffs casino bringing first Shake Shack to Omaha area.

New $200 million Council Bluffs casino bringing first Shake Shack to Omaha area. * Isaac Nielsen Council Bluffs Nonpareil * Sep 15, 2026 Updated Sep 16, 2026 * 2 Hollywood Council Bluffs General Manager Paul Czak shares comments at the groundbreaking of Hollywood Casino on Sept. 14, 2026. COUNCIL BLUFFS - PENN Entertainment broke ground Monday on a new $180 million to $200 million Hollywood Casino in Council Bluffs that will replace the aging Ameristar riverboat and also add new restaurants and a parking garage to the property. The new Hollywood Casino Council Bluffs is expected to open in 2028. The project will include approximately 1,000 slot machines and 25 table games, along with the first Shake Shack in the Omaha metro area and a new fast-casual Asian restaurant, Red Lotus. The casino will be built in the existing Ameristar parking lot and connected to the property's existing pavilion and hotel. The 160-plus hotel rooms, 1853 Bistro and Steakhouse, Sportsbook Restaurant and Bar, Club 38 VIP Lounge and buffet will remain, PENN said in a press release. People are also reading... Paul Czak, general manager of Hollywood Council Bluffs, said the new facility will provide several features that aren't available in the current three-level riverboat. "Everything will be a lot more modern," Czak told The Nonpareil. "We have a 30-plus-year-old riverboat, so the new casino will feature 1,000 slots, 25 or so table games. We'll have separate high-limit slot and table-game rooms, which we don't offer right now." The new facility will also allow guests to move through the casino on a single level instead of using elevators and escalators, Czak said. The existing casino will continue operating during construction. A new parking garage is expected to open before the casino, which Czak said should help with traffic and parking while construction continues. The property currently has about 1,000 spaces in its parking garage and more than 600 additional spaces on the lot to the north. About 450 construction jobs are expected to be created during the project, with roughly 50 additional permanent positions expected once the new casino opens. Czak said some of the new positions will support the two new restaurants, while others will be needed as the casino's expected volume increases. The future Hollywood Casino will be PENN's 20th Hollywood-branded gaming facility. Aaron Rosenthal, PENN's senior vice president of regional operations, said the company viewed the Council Bluffs project as an opportunity to make a substantial investment in a market where it has operated for three decades. "The company had a choice of what to build here when we decided it was time to move ashore, and we chose nothing short of a best-in-class facility," Rosenthal said. The new casino is being designed by JCJ Architecture and constructed by W.E. O'Neil and Russell General Contractors. Mayor Jill Shudak said the project represents an investment in Council Bluffs. "This means new jobs, economic activity and more reasons for people to come and visit Council Bluffs and experience everything our community has to offer," Shudak said. Iowa West Foundation President and CEO Brenda Mainwaring also highlighted the long relationship between Iowa West and the casino, saying the success of Ameristar and other casino partners has allowed the foundation to invest in Southwest Iowa communities. Mainwaring said the Iowa West Foundation has awarded about $600 million in grants, which she said has helped generate roughly $1.2 billion in total investment through matching funds. Czak said the casino's age was a major reason for the decision to build a new facility, while the project will help PENN compete with newer casinos in the Omaha-area market. "Our facility is old and ready to be replaced, and we're just glad to be able to help be more competitive with some of the new offerings in both Iowa and Nebraska," Czak told The Nonpareil. Plans for the existing riverboat after the new casino opens have not been finalized. Czak said PENN had previously explored moving the boat to another casino property where it could continue to be used. "When we first started down this path, there were at least a dozen casinos for which that boat would have been an upgrade for," Czak told The Nonpareil. "Hopefully, we're able to sail it down someplace else and let it continue its use." Czak said that was the company's plan several years ago, although circumstances could change before construction is completed. The new casino is expected to take 18 to 24 months to construct.
