Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • 2024 produced $1.4 million net income and $2.7 million net assets.
  • EMF raised $1.2 million for the Holiday Fund, proving community fundraising strength.
  • Two new reporters joined The Almanac in 2026, signaling continued editorial investment.

What critics are saying

  • 2024 revenue still depended on contributions and program services, not recurring subscriptions.
  • Local-news staffing remains thin; one editor, two reporters, and one visual journalist span key coverage.
  • If donor enthusiasm fades after 2024's surge, EMF's newsroom expansion stalls quickly.

What makes Embarcadero Media Foundation unique

  • 2024 nonprofit conversion revived The Almanac, Palo Alto Weekly, and seven hyperlocal sites.
  • EMF serves 500,000 residents across MidPeninsula and Tri-Valley with print, web, and newsletters.
  • Andrea Gemmet returned in January 2026, pairing veteran editorial leadership with local expertise.
