Requirements
  • A license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia is required.
  • Certification in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R) is required.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Knowledge of Catheterization Laboratory and vascular-interventional modality concepts and practices, including balloon angioplasty, stenting, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and pacemaker or defibrillator implantation is required.
  • Knowledge of teaching and instructing procedures in the interventional lab is required.
  • Knowledge of radiation protection standards, minimum radiographic exposure techniques, and lead shielding for standard or fluoroscopic procedures is required.
  • Knowledge of instructional techniques for educating newly hired or promoted technologists or radiology residents about examination functions is required.
  • Ability to communicate with staff and cardiologists is required.
  • The role requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulders during the work shift.
  • The role requires lifting up to 50 pounds from floor to waist, lifting up to 20 pounds, carrying up to 40 pounds a reasonable distance, and pushing or pulling with 30 pounds of force.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate ordering of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory-specific supplies with Logistics and Prosthetics, including catheters, balloons, stents, and sheaths.
  • Coordinate communication with vendors and schedule their visits.
  • Scrub, circulate, monitor, and operate equipment during complex examination and treatment procedures, including intra-aortic balloon pump therapy for critically ill patients.
  • Ensure medications are properly labeled and available for physician administration.
  • Apply functional knowledge of cardiac medications, including appropriate doses and side effects.
  • Assist with training and mentoring technicians, nurses, nursing students, and cardiology fellows.
  • Assist the cardiology manager with quality control and performance improvement activities.
  • Work with physicians to complete diagnostic and interventional invasive cardiac procedures, including left heart catheterization, right heart catheterization, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, stent placement, intra-aortic balloon pump procedures, intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, pressure-wire procedures, pericardiocentesis, temporary pacemakers, radial artery procedures, peripheral procedures, permanent pacemaker placement, and automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator placement.
  • Monitor procedure progression using independent judgment and anticipate the need for specific instruments or catheters.
  • Apply detailed knowledge of vascular and coronary anatomy and physiology related to cardiovascular function.
  • Serve as scrub assistant to the cardiologist for device implantation, including pacemakers and defibrillators, using sterile technique, surgical tools, electrocautery, and suturing techniques.
  • Assist with fluoroscopy during internal and external placement of cardiac pacemakers.
  • Use angiographic interventional-radiology equipment, digital fluoroscopy, Picture Archiving and Communication System viewing stations, and hospital computer systems including Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture and Computerized Patient Record System.
  • Scrub, circulate, and monitor advanced procedures, including electrophysiological procedures, intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, fractional flow reserve, the Acist device, AngioJet, filter wires, permanent pacemaker insertions, and automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator insertions.
  • Interpret waveforms from the great vessels and all chambers of the heart, distinguish normal findings from abnormalities and artifacts, and alert the physician to impending life-threatening situations.
  • Use knowledge of complex examination and treatment procedures to provide training and supervision, evaluate and initiate performance-improvement projects, and write Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory policies, procedures, and protocols.
