About the job

Requirements
  • At least 15 years building production software, including at least 8 years leading engineers and meaningful time leading managers.
  • Maintain current technical credibility through recent production code writing or review experience.
  • Have deep experience with distributed backend systems at scale, including data modeling, consistency and idempotency, queues, event-driven design, and operating these systems.
  • Demonstrate a track record of raising engineering standards through practices that measurably improve quality, velocity, or reliability.
  • Have reliability ownership experience, including carrying a pager, leading incident command during a serious outage, and implementing follow-through to prevent recurrence.
  • Have experience in payments, fintech, banking infrastructure, or another domain where money, ledgers, or regulatory obligations make correctness essential.
  • Have hired and developed engineering managers.
  • Communicate complex technical tradeoffs clearly to executives, compliance professionals, and partner engineering teams.
  • Be comfortable representing technical positions in board or partner discussions and under commercial pressure.
  • Work effectively amid ambiguity and at speed.
Responsibilities
  • Own engineering strategy and architecture across card issuing, wallets, ledger, money movement, onchain settlement, and integrations with card networks and banking partners, including the multi-year technical roadmap.
  • Set and own engineering quality standards across system design, code review, testing, observability, documentation, and technical decision-making, ensuring correctness for systems that move customer funds.
  • Review critical designs, advise on high-consequence architecture and build-versus-buy decisions, and provide technical oversight without owning day-to-day coding.
  • Drive reliability, scalability, and operational excellence by establishing service-level objectives, improving incident response, planning capacity for 10x growth, and designing resilient systems with graceful degradation, idempotency, and replay capabilities.
  • Build security, compliance, and correctness into the platform in partnership with Risk, Compliance, and Security to meet PCI, SOC 2, fraud-control, regulatory, and blockchain infrastructure requirements.
  • Increase engineering velocity without sacrificing quality by improving continuous integration and continuous delivery, developer tooling, local environments, technical debt management, and architecture that enables safe, independent team delivery.
  • Build and develop a high-performing engineering organization by hiring and coaching engineering managers and technical leads, establishing clear team ownership and boundaries, and owning headcount planning and the performance bar.
  • Serve on the leadership team, translate company strategy into technical plans, partner across Product, Design, Risk, Compliance, and go-to-market, and represent engineering to the board, banking and network partners, and customers.
Desired Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with card issuing, processing, or the Visa and Mastercard network stack.
  • Working knowledge of stablecoins, onchain settlement, custody and key management, or Ethereum Virtual Machine and Solana infrastructure.
  • Experience operating under SOC 2, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, or bank and program-manager oversight.
  • Experience leading distributed or multi-region teams.

About the company

Rain provides an Earned Wage Access (EWA) platform that lets employees access part of their earned income before payday. It integrates with employers’ payroll and timekeeping systems (such as Workday and Netchex) to track gross earnings in real time, and employees use a mobile app to view available earnings and request a transfer to their bank account for a small, ATM-like fee. Revenue comes mainly from these transaction fees. Beyond EWA, Rain offers financial wellness tools in its app, including spending analytics, balance alerts, and access to financial coaching and education. The company aims to reduce financial stress for workers, help employers improve retention and productivity, and serve a broad range of clients from small businesses to large enterprises. Its differentiators include seamless payroll integration, real-time earnings tracking, and a bundled suite of financial wellness features.

Naver invests in US crypto payment firm Rain's $250M Series C round

Naver Ventures has invested in Rain, a US virtual asset payment infrastructure firm, as part of its $250 million Series C funding round. This marks the Silicon Valley investment subsidiary's first investment in a virtual asset company, though the exact amount was not disclosed. Founded in 2021, Rain provides infrastructure technology enabling stablecoin payments through Visa's existing payment network and holds core membership status with the card company. When users pay at Visa merchants with Rain-issued cards, their stablecoins automatically convert to local currency for settlement. Rain previously partnered with Wyoming State government to launch a physical card supporting payments via the state's self-issued stablecoin. Analysts view Naver's investment as strategic positioning to expand stablecoin payment operations globally.

Rain launches Agent Control Layer for AI payment governance

Rain, a stablecoin payments infrastructure company, has released its Agent Control Layer, enabling businesses to set programmatic spending guardrails for AI agents at the infrastructure level. The capability allows companies to define conditions under which AI agents can spend and move money before transactions occur. The system works across Rain's APIs, letting partners configure controls including merchant category codes, approved merchants, transaction amounts and frequency. Parameters are enforced at issuance rather than retroactively. Rain's infrastructure already supports agents booking travel, managing subscriptions and executing procurement workflows in production. The Agent Control Layer extends across Rain's money movement suite, including virtual accounts and stablecoin payments. Y Combinator-backed Sponge is among early customers using the technology to issue virtual cards backed by stablecoin balances.

Rain adds Mastercard to stablecoin card network after $250M Series C raise

Rain has expanded its Stablecoin Card network through a partnership with Mastercard, adding credit and prepaid card options alongside its existing Visa-focused model. The deal enables institutional clients to settle payments using stablecoins across Mastercard-linked systems whilst maintaining familiar card experiences. The expansion follows Rain's recent $250 million Series C funding round at a $1.95 billion valuation. The company handles stablecoin conversion and settlement behind the scenes, allowing enterprises to launch compliant card programmes without overhauling existing payment systems. The move positions Rain deeper within global payment infrastructure as stablecoins increasingly support settlement, treasury movement and merchant payments beyond crypto trading. Rain now competes with firms like Stripe and Coinbase in pushing stablecoins into practical business use cases across dual payment networks.
