About the Job

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Structural, or Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in structural analysis.
  • Experience in structural and mechanical design, load and stress analysis, and finite element analysis.
  • Working knowledge of NASTRAN finite element analysis software and FEMAP (preferred) or PATRAN as a finite element pre- and post-processor.
  • Experience performing engineering analyses and programming in Excel, MATLAB, Python, or similar software.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of flight hardware as part of a design team from preliminary through detailed design, drawing release, manufacturing, integration, testing, transportation, and launch.
  • Perform structural analyses using classical mechanics calculations and finite element analysis to meet stiffness, strength, Structural Thermal Optical Performance, and other applicable structural requirements.
  • Generate finite element models for normal modes, linear static and dynamic analyses to predict and improve structural response and stability as required.
  • Perform analysis for and support static and dynamic structural tests.
  • Prepare analysis reports and test documents.
  • Keep up with and adhere to NASA and Goddard Space Flight Center specific requirements, guidelines, and procedures.

Desired Qualifications

  • On-site support is preferred, though remote work may be possible if approved by the customer.
  • Experience with Integrated Modeling and Structural Thermal Optical Performance analysis, including MATLAB and Python programming for custom code generation and maintenance to recover flight system optical performance metrics from mechanical distortions for steady-state and transient cases, including wavefront error (RMS and Zernike polynomial breakdown), pupil shear and clocking, and angle of incidence.
  • Experience analyzing aerospace structural systems, materials, and load paths under quasi-static inertial, mechanical, vibro-acoustic, thermal, pressure, and shock environments.
  • Expertise analyzing composite material structures in addition to metals, sandwich construction, plastics, mechanically fastened interfaces, bonded joints, and welds.
  • Experience analyzing and designing space flight hardware, including spacecraft bus and instrument structures, deployables, mechanisms, components such as kinematic mounts, electronic boxes and boards, thermal control systems, optical benches, mechanical ground support equipment, and test fixtures.
  • Experience documenting structural analysis activities through reports, technical memoranda, and presentation packages.
