Requirements
  • All applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia.
  • Family physicians must have membership with the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide inpatient care through the Hospitalist Service for one to two weeks per month, either independently or as split coverage.
  • Coordinate patient care and lead a multidisciplinary inpatient team.
  • Participate in twice-weekly team rounds and other quality improvement and evaluation activities.
  • Manage the medical needs of 20–26 inpatients throughout their hospitalizations.
  • Facilitate patient transfers to facilities with higher levels of care when medically indicated.
  • Coordinate appropriate community-based care upon discharge when necessary.
  • Be available for overnight calls from nursing staff caring for inpatients under the physician’s care.
  • Ensure delivery of comprehensive primary health care services to patients of all ages and stages of health or illness.
  • Be accountable for appropriate workload and practice.
  • Coordinate continuity of patient care with health care providers within the practice and community.
  • Provide and coordinate community-based, secondary-level, and tertiary-level health care.
  • Operate within the Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of Nova Scotia Health Authority.
  • Collaborate with hospital team members to address the community’s health needs.
  • Participate in quality improvement and evaluation activities.
  • Use an electronic medical record and record relevant patient details in a provincially approved system accessible to collaborating team members.
