About the Company

Ercot

Manages Texas electric grid operations

ERCOT coordinates the flow of electric power for about 27 million Texas customers as the region’s independent system operator. It schedules and directs electricity on a grid with 54,100+ miles of transmission lines and 1,250+ generation units, and it handles wholesale market settlements and retail switching for 8 million premises. Operated as a nonprofit, membership-based organization with a board and oversight by the Texas Public Utility Commission and Legislature, ERCOT brings together consumers, generators, retailers, and utilities to keep the grid running and markets functioning. It acts as the central planner and operator of the grid, coordinating generation and transmission in real time and processing payments and transfers to support competition in both wholesale and retail electricity. Its goal is a reliable, efficient electric grid in Texas with fair markets and smooth customer switching.
