Gibson Dunn taps Freshfields for arbitration heavyweight in Singapore.

Gibson Dunn taps Freshfields for arbitration heavyweight in Singapore. Nicholas Lingard joins as practice co-chair, marking Gibson Dunn's third partner hire from Freshfields in Singapore in less than a year 19 October 2026 Gibson Dunn & Crutcher has hired a heavyweight arbitration partner from Freshfields in Singapore as co-chair of its international arbitration practice. Nicholas Lingard has joined after 15 years at Freshfields, where he led the international arbitration group in Asia and was managing partner of the Singapore office. He brings a high-profile practice representing sovereign states and investors in politically sensitive treaty arbitrations and also focuses on commercial and construction disputes. "Expanding our arbitration and disputes offering in Asia is a strategic priority for us, and there is no one better placed to anchor it than Nick," Rahim Moloo, co-chair of Gibson Dunn's international arbitration practice group, said in a statement. "He is one of the best arbitration lawyers I know, and his practice aligns with our client base and industry strengths. He will immediately enhance our ability to represent clients in complex cross-border disputes." Lingard's hire follows the firm's former Asia head of arbitration, Paul Tan, joining One Essex Court in late 2024, when it trimmed its Singapore partnership by half in a move that left it with five partners in the city. Advertisement Following his arrival, Gibson Dunn will have nine partners in Singapore, including private equity and M&A duo Nigel Gleeson and Jon Bowden, both of whom have joined from Freshfields within the past year. Gibson Dunn's chair and managing partner, Barbara Becker, said Lingard's hire was in line with the firm's strategy to "build destination practices in everything we do, all connected across our platform to serve our global clients seamlessly". She added: "In Singapore, Nick deepens what we offer clients in private equity, M&A, finance, financial regulation and now international arbitration. We plan to keep investing in the region with intention." Lingard's hire comes as Gibson Dunn focuses on growing its broader disputes offering, which accounted for more than $2bn of its record $4.2bn in gross revenue in 2025 and, according to research by The Lawyer, is the fastest-growing disputes practice among the world's 10 leading firms. LAW OVER BORDERS COMPARATIVE GUIDES Arbitration Law Guide The Law Over Borders Comparative Guide to Arbitration provides a comprehensive understanding of the current complexities of international arbitration... | 1yr. Alongside marquee litigation hires, mostly in the US, the firm has been adding top arbitration talent. Last year it recruited barrister Christopher Harris KC from London set 3 Verulam Buildings as co-chair of its international arbitration and judgment and arbitral award enforcement practices, in a move that saw it debut in Zurich. The firm also hired Patrick Pearsall, former US State Department chief of investment arbitration, in Washington DC from legacy Allen & Overy. Meanwhile, Freshfields, which has been aggressively targeting US growth in recent years, has seen a spate of partner departures in Asia over the past few months. Senior corporate dealmakers Grace Huang and Edward Freeman left for Latham & Watkins in Hong Kong, while M&A duo Noah Carr and Gordon Palmquist moved to White & Case in Tokyo, though this was offset by the hire of Tokyo M&A partner Gregory Salathé earlier this month from Morrison Foerster. In July, it emerged that Freshfields had axed equity partners in the UK, France and Germany and downgraded others' equity shares as part of the drive to improve its US growth prospects. Commenting on Lingard's departure, a Freshfields spokesperson said: "We wish Nick all the best".

Leading Texas patent trial lawyers Nicholas Mathews and Erik Fountain join Gibson Dunn's premier IP Litigation practice.

Leading Texas patent trial lawyers Nicholas Mathews and Erik Fountain join Gibson Dunn's premier IP Litigation practice. Thursday, October 1, 2026 Gibson Dunn announced today that Nicholas (Nick) Mathews and Erik Fountain have joined the firm's Intellectual Property Practice Group as partners in Dallas. The addition of Nick and Erik to Gibson Dunn unites one of the country's leading Texas patent trial teams with the nation's premier IP litigation practice. The pair join the firm from McKool Smith. Gibson Dunn's Intellectual Property Group is widely recognized as the nation's leading IP litigation team, handling - and winning - some of the most significant intellectual property disputes across the country. In the past year alone, Gibson Dunn's IP team has earned the industry's highest honors, including The American Lawyer's IP Litigation Department of the Year, Law360's IP Practice Group of the Year, and Managing IP's Patent Disputes Firm of the Year. Nick and Erik's arrival further strengthens Gibson Dunn's national IP trial team and its already formidable Texas patent litigation bench. Their arrival also builds on Gibson Dunn's market-leading litigation practice in Texas, which features exceptional first-chair trial lawyers who have secured significant courtroom victories in Texas and across the country, including a record $667 million jury verdict and a victory in the second-ever trial in the newly established Texas Business Court. The American Lawyer named Gibson Dunn its Texas Regional Litigation Department of the Year in 2025. Nick is a nationally recognized first-chair patent trial lawyer who, together with Erik, has a long track record of success in major patent trials in Texas. The pair joins Gibson Dunn following an extraordinary string of courtroom successes, securing complete defense verdicts in three consecutive jury trials in the Eastern District of Texas over the past year. Most recently, in August 2026, Nick and Erik led the trial team representing AT&T, Ericsson, and Nokia in ASUS Technology Licensing Inc. et al. v. AT&T Inc. et al., securing a complete defense verdict in a case in which the plaintiffs had sought $436 million in damages. Nick and Erik focus on high-stakes patent litigation and represent some of the leading technology companies in the world. Earlier in their careers, Nick and Erik both served as law clerks to the Honorable J. Rodney Gilstrap, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in Marshall - Nick clerked for the court during Judge Gilstrap's first year on the bench. "Nick and Erik are exceptional trial lawyers - highly respected and highly successful in Texas and beyond," said Josh Krevitt, Co-Chair of Gibson Dunn's Intellectual Property Practice Group. "Their track record of jury trial victories in Texas is extraordinary and speaks to the caliber of trial lawyers they are. We have admired and worked closely with Nick and Erik for years, and we are thrilled that they are joining our national IP litigation team." "Nick and Erik are a perfect fit for our group, because they are outstanding trial lawyers with a demonstrated ability to win the cases that matter most to clients," said Kate Dominguez, Co-Chair of Gibson Dunn's Intellectual Property Practice Group. "Our IP team has tremendous momentum across the country, and their arrival adds even greater depth to a trial bench that is already handling some of the most consequential patent disputes in the market." "Gibson Dunn has the leading IP practice in the country, with an incredible collection of trial lawyers and an exceptional record of success in the courtroom, handling major IP disputes," said Nick. "The opportunity to join forces with Gibson Dunn's deep bench of outstanding trial and appellate lawyers across the country - and to bring that collective strength to clients' most significant IP disputes - is incredibly exciting." "We have long admired Gibson Dunn's IP litigation practice - both its extraordinary group of trial lawyers and the successes they have achieved in high-stakes IP disputes," said Erik. "Nick and I wanted to be part of that. We are coming to Gibson Dunn with tremendous momentum in Texas, and the opportunity to combine our trial experience with the talent, national reach, and winning record of this team is incredibly exciting."

Veteran project finance lawyer raymond Azar joins Gibson Dunn as Co-Chair of Power and Renewables Practice Group.

Veteran project finance lawyer raymond Azar joins Gibson Dunn as Co-Chair of Power and Renewables Practice Group. Tuesday, September 29, 2026 Gibson Dunn announced today that Dr. Raymond Azar has joined the firm's New York office, where he will serve as a partner in the Energy and Infrastructure Practice Group and as Co-Chair of the Power and Renewables Practice Group. A leading project finance lawyer, Ray advises developers, borrowers, and lenders on transactions spanning every phase of a power project. Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, Ray was a partner at White & Case. "Ray is an exceptional power lawyer with a rare combination of sponsor- and lender-side experience across a project's full life cycle," said Tomer Pinkusiewicz, Co-Chair of the Energy and Infrastructure Practice Group. "The power market is growing rapidly in both scale and complexity, increasing demand for advisers who can work across all aspects of a transaction. Ray's experience is highly complementary to our strengths across project development, financing, and M&A, giving clients even greater depth on their most complex power and infrastructure transactions." "I've known and worked alongside members of this team for years, so I know firsthand the strength of the platform, the culture, and the caliber of its clients. With the growth across the power industry, the timing was especially compelling," said Ray. "Power is no longer simply a procurement line item - it is central to where, when, and how major projects get built. Data centers are the clearest example: five years ago, the data center and the power plant were separate transactions; increasingly, they are one deal. Clients need advisers who can approach the project and its power solutions as an integrated whole. This is where this team's distinctive strengths really come through." Ray's arrival continues the expansion of the firm's energy and infrastructure platform, which has recently added Gianluca Bacchiocchi and Jamal Lama in New York, Noah Hansford and Terrie Khoshbin in Dallas, James Johnson and Victoria Delacey in London, Clay Brett and Omar Samji in Houston, and Waleed Rasrommani in Riyadh. Together, these additions deepen the firm's capabilities for clients across the increasingly interconnected energy and digital infrastructure sectors. Gibson Dunn's Power and Renewables Practice Group, which Ray will co-lead, advises clients globally on the development, financing, acquisition, and sale of renewable energy, energy transition, and conventional power assets. About Dr. Raymond Azar Ray's practice focuses on sponsor- and lender-side power and infrastructure transactions. His dealmaking experience spans renewable energy, energy transition, conventional power, oil and gas, petrochemicals, and infrastructure across debt, equity, structured finance, and capital markets transactions. His work with both developers and lenders - from early-stage development and engineering through financing and execution - gives him distinctive versatility and a broad perspective on how complex power and infrastructure projects are developed, structured, financed, and executed. ABA Death Penalty Representation Project marks 40 years, recognizes firms, lawyers for pro bono service.

ABA Death Penalty Representation Project marks 40 years, recognizes firms, lawyers for pro bono service. The ABA Death Penalty Representation Project marked its 40th anniversary at its 2026 Volunteer Recognition & Awards Event on Sept. 17 in Washington, D.C. Since its founding in 1986, the project has worked to improve the quality and availability of legal representation for persons facing death sentences. "As we mark our 40th anniversary, we are proud to honor the law firms and lawyers who take on these extraordinarily complex, high-stakes pro bono cases," said Emily Olson-Gault, chief counsel and director and of the ABA Death Penalty Representation Project. "There is no federal constitutional right to counsel beyond the early stages of a capital appeal, but it is at this critical stage where new information so often comes to light, such as violations of a person's rights at trial. For 40 years, the project has helped the pro bono community step in to fill that gap, identify these cases and provide effective pro bono representation." The 2026 Volunteer Recognition & Awards Event honored law firms and individual attorneys whose pro bono work has shown exceptional commitment to excellence in capital defense. The Exceptional Service Award, presented to firms nominated by their peers for outstanding service to death row prisoners, was awarded to Arnold & Porter, Gibson Dunn and White & Case. The project also presented the John Paul Stevens Guiding Hand of Counsel Award, which recognizes the extraordinary efforts of individual attorneys and full-time capital defenders. First presented to Justice Stevens in 2011, this year's award was given to Don Knight and Brian M. White. The event was hosted at Crowell & Moring. "The right to counsel is not merely abstract as a constitutional promise," ABA President Barbara J. Howard said in recorded remarks. "It becomes real because lawyers are willing to show up, take difficult cases, challenge injustice and remain at their clients' side even when the outcome is uncertain." Seth Waxman, former solicitor general of the United States, provided keynote remarks and spoke about the project's history. Waxman is one of the project's founders. Sister Helen Prejean, author of "Dead Man Walking," joined him in presenting the awards. "Since its creation, the project has connected more than 500 capital cases with pro bono counsel," said Keith J. Harrison, Crowell & Moring partner and chair of the Project Steering Committee. "These are tough cases at the intersection of criminal law and civil litigation, and they require tremendous commitment from lawyers and their firms. We commend the firms who have volunteered to take on these cases over many years, and we congratulate our winners of the Exceptional Service Award and John Paul Stevens Guiding Hand of Counsel Award for their remarkable service," To watch the awards event, click here.
