Exxon nears a record as Treasury says Gulf oil is "roaring back" and 2026 EPS hits $13.29

ExxonMobil heads into its October 30 earnings report near a record high, even as US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Persian Gulf oil exports have passed pre-conflict levels. Brent crude fell 1% on Monday to about $115 a barrel on hopes the Iran war is easing. Analysts expect Exxon to earn $13.29 a share in 2026, nearly double 2025's $6.99, driven by war-lifted oil prices and refining margins. They have cut their 2028 estimate 5% since June, to $10.62. Exxon's second-quarter earnings reached $14.5 billion, up from $7.1 billion a year earlier. The company says each $1 move in Brent shifts yearly earnings by about $700 million. Exxon trades at about 13x forward earnings, but about 17x on 2028 estimates. Its December plan update may matter more than the October report.

Exxon recoups $55B Guyana investment, turning the project into a free cash flow engine

Exxon Mobil says its Guyana project has fully paid back its investment, a shift management called "very much an inflection into free cash flow." The company said on a July 31, 2026 call that it recovered its $55 billion investment and all operating costs. Under the contract, up to 75% of production can go toward cost recovery. The rest is shared 50-50 with Guyana's government. Gross output was about 900,000 barrels a day in the second quarter. Exxon's free cash flow hit $17.0 billion in the quarter, up from $5.27 billion a year earlier. Management expects Guyana's free cash flow in 2030 to be twice the 2025 level. Higher oil prices may have boosted the quarter, and Exxon temporarily lost about 10% of upstream production to the Middle East conflict. The fifth floating production ship, Errea Wittu, is on track to start up by the end of 2026.

Exxon stock up 65.8% in a year: key dates to watch, from Q3 results to Guyana's fifth vessel

Exxon Mobil (XOM) shares returned 65.8% over the past year, against 17.4% for the S&P 500, helped by tight markets. Several events could move the stock over the next six months. The company reports third-quarter 2026 results on October 30, 2026. Second-quarter net income more than doubled to $14.5 billion from $7.08 billion a year earlier, and management expects refining margins to stay very high. Errea Wittu, its fifth production vessel in Guyana, is due to start up by the end of 2026. Exxon also plans investment decisions on projects in Mozambique and Papua New Guinea before year-end. The Middle East conflict cost Exxon about 10% of upstream output in the second quarter. Windfall taxes on European refining are a risk.

Cash beats debt: stronger balance sheets sit closer to 52-week highs in all five pairs

Companies with more cash than debt are holding up better as inflation hits 3.7%, the 10-year Treasury yields about 5.1%, and US oil tops $100 a barrel. An analysis of five industry pairs found the stronger company sat closer to its 52-week high in every case. In four, debt made the difference. Microsoft, with $20 billion of net cash, is 1.8% below its high. CoreWeave, with $46 billion of net debt, is 56.3% below. Exxon is 0.4% below its high, against 35.6% for American Airlines. Nucor trails its high by 4.9%, while Celanese trails by 30.8%. Alphabet is down 14.4%, while Charter, with $96 billion of net debt, is down 57.0%. Costco and Nike are the exception: Nike's gap stems from falling sales, not debt.

Diesel at $6.20 a gallon: Marathon leads five energy stocks set to gain

US diesel prices averaged $6.199 a gallon for the week of October 5, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) said. That is down from a 2026 peak of $6.529 in late September but more than $2.50 above a year ago. A disruption to Strait of Hormuz shipping earlier this year cut global refined fuel exports. Refiners gain most. Marathon Petroleum's refining margin doubled to $36.33 a barrel in the second quarter, from $17.58 a year earlier. Integrated majors also benefit. Chevron's downstream earnings rose to $4.9 billion from $737 million, while ExxonMobil's refining and fuels earnings reached $4.1 billion, nearly double a year earlier. Pipeline firms Energy Transfer and Enterprise Products Partners earn mostly fees, so they get little direct lift. The EIA expects prices to stay high through October before easing.
