Requirements
  • At least 5–10 years of professional experience, with a significant portion in similar or closely related roles.
  • Experience using empirical tools to make rigorous, evidence-based decisions under uncertainty.
  • Experience funding, building, or scaling new programs, initiatives, or organizations.
  • Experience using rigorous quantitative analysis and cost-effectiveness modeling to support decision-making.
  • Ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including funders, research organizations, and nongovernmental organizations.
  • Experience owning large budgets and/or grant portfolios.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on directness and clarity.
  • Experience setting and iterating on strategy in complex, fast-moving environments.
Responsibilities
  • Take primary responsibility for a significant grantmaking portfolio and set its strategy.
  • Evaluate funding opportunities and determine which opportunities matter most.
  • Decide what to fund, how to structure grants, and when to build something new.
  • Review empirical evidence and use cost-effectiveness modeling in grantmaking decisions.
  • Build strong relationships with grantees and ground-truth how programs are delivered.
  • Consult subject-matter experts and incorporate broader context and judgment into funding decisions.
  • Communicate externally about GiveWell’s work.
  • Mentor and advise other members of the team.
  • Work closely with Senior Researchers and incorporate their analysis into grantmaking decisions.
  • Assess portfolio priorities, opportunities for expansion, program cost-effectiveness, organizational track records, coverage, quality, and adherence to evidence-based practices.
  • Fund research that could improve future grantmaking.
  • Determine acceptable uncertainty before making grants and identify questions requiring resolution.
  • Complete potential team rotations before settling on a final subteam placement.

  • Experience reviewing randomized controlled trials and impact evaluations.
  • Experience working with governments or multilateral organizations.
  • Experience gathering first-hand data to inform program design.
