Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in an applicable STEM field, or an associate's degree in an applicable STEM field plus four years of relevant experience, or a master's degree in an applicable STEM field.
  • Two years of experience in civil engineering testing labs, machine shops, working with testing devices similar to those in a civil engineering concrete and soil testing lab, or related experience.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, potentially including communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, the electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment systems, or water treatment systems.
  • Ability to work with shop machines such as milling machines and lathes.
  • Ability to work with instrumented measuring devices.
  • Ability to work with large amounts of information and documentation.
  • Skill in working with laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures related to laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to write procedures and instructions for the use of laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in working with people at various educational levels.
Responsibilities
  • Manage and coordinate the civil engineering laboratories.
  • Ensure that laboratory safety rules are followed in accordance with university policies and procedures.
  • Assist with installation and initial operation of new civil engineering laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain civil engineering laboratory equipment and develop plans for equipment upgrades as necessary.
  • Assist in instructing students on the use of civil engineering laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure sufficient supplies are available for laboratory equipment use.
  • Develop and maintain an operating budget for the civil engineering laboratories, including regular supplies and maintenance, equipment repair, and system upgrades.
  • Assist in constructing models or other materials needed for civil engineering laboratory equipment.
  • Assist with operations of the mechanical engineering shop as needed.
  • Safely operate university vehicles and machinery.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • Three or more years of experience in civil engineering testing labs, machine shops, working with testing devices similar to those in a civil engineering concrete and soil testing lab, or related experience.
  • Experience with a wide range of laboratory testing and equipment, including hydraulics and hydrology, materials testing particularly concrete, and problematic soils such as expansive soils and other geomaterials such as geosynthetics.
  • Certifications in concrete and/or asphalt testing.
