Lindblad Expeditions buys 60% stake in White Desert for $61m. Lindblad Expedition Holdings has acquired a majority stake in luxury Antarctica specialist White Desert, which it says will usher in "an exciting new chapter for Antarctic travel". The 60% stake, which also includes a new aviation offering called Echo Charlie, was acquired for a cash purchase price of approximately $61 million, plus $6 million for cash on the balance sheet. The deal aims to tap into "significant opportunities" to expand White Desert's offering. The company was founded in 2005 by Patrick Woodhead and offers clients the chance to stay in the remote interior of Antarctica with "a level of comfort previously unheard of on the ice". White Desert and Echo Charlie will continue as stand-alone brands and will "preserve a founder-led vision". Woodhead will serve as chairman of White Desert, chief executive of Echo Charlie and join Lindblad Expeditions as a strategic innovation advisor. As a result of the acquisition and "strong performance across the business", Lindblad Expeditions has updated its full-year 2026 revenue, net yield and adjusted Ebitda guidance. Lindblad Expeditions has been operating expeditions for more than 40 years across seven continents and operates and sells the co-branded National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions. Lindblad Expeditions chief executive officer Natalya Leahy said: "While this is the largest transaction in the history of the company, it is much more than a business deal. "It is a powerful partnership between two businesses that have spent decades pushing the boundaries of what experiential travel can be." White Desert founder and chairman Woodhead added: "Having spent the last 20 years pioneering tourism in the interior, RateHawk is privileged to join forces with people who did exactly the same thing, only 40 years earlier on the coastline of Antarctica. "With a shared ethos for small-scale, responsible travel, we are thrilled for what lies ahead." Lindblad Expeditions co-chair Mark Ein said: "Over the last decade, its ambition has been to build a global platform of exceptional experiential travel brands, fuelled by expertise, passion and innovation, and led by iconic founders. "The acquisition of White Desert and Echo Charlie now adds an extraordinary set of pinnacle journeys to our guests." In addition to expedition cruises, Lindblad Expeditions also has the land-based brands Natural Habitat Adventures, Off the Beaten Path, DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co., Classic Journeys and Wineland-Thomson Adventures.
Lindblad Expeditions is buying a 60% stake in White Desert and Echo Charlie in a $69 million deal, its largest acquisition to date.
Lindblad Expeditions expands company portfolio with specialist acquisitions in 'largest-ever transaction' Mergers and acquisitions Emma Dooney 15 September 2026 Lindblad Expeditions has acquired a majority ownership of luxury Antarctic company, White Desert, and Echo Charlie, a new aviation travel brand providing specialised access to unique destinations. The company, which operates immersive, educational expeditions to more than 100 destinations across every continent, now holds a 60% stake in White Desert. Natalya Leahy, Chief Executive Officer of Lindblad Expeditions, said: "While this is the largest transaction in the history of the company, it is much more than a business deal. "It is a powerful partnership between two businesses that have spent decades pushing the boundaries of what experiential travel can be." Lindblad Expeditions said the $61 million deal would expand the offerings of White Desert, the only commercial operator to fly tourists directly into Antarctica. Upon landing, clients stay in one of its two luxury camps - Whichaway, a retreat with six heated pods, or Eco, a boutique retreat inspired by astronauts. The experience also includes guided excursions to the Geographic South Pole and an Emperor Penguin colony, meals prepared by award-winning chefs, and photography workshops. "Having spent the last 20 years pioneering tourism in the interior, we are privileged to join forces with people who did exactly the same thing, only 40 years earlier on the coastline of Antarctica," said Patrick Woodhead, Founder and Chairman of White Desert. "With a shared ethos for small-scale, responsible travel, we are thrilled for what lies ahead." Lindblad Expeditions will also support White Desert with the development of Echo Charlie, a collection of itineraries that revolves around a fully restored DC-3 aircraft. The 12-seater monoplane, which can legally land on remote airstrips, will take passengers to destinations like Colombia, Patagonia, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. "Echo Charlie delivers on what most of us only read about in childhood stories - flying to hidden places, uncovering the secrets of ancient cultures, and experiencing the breathtakingly diverse landscapes," said Leahy. "By combining Patrick's aviation expertise with our global platform and deep shared spirit of innovation, we are about to enter a new chapter entirely - more awe-inspiring experiences to more guests in more places on this planet." Woodhead will serve as White Desert Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Echo Charlie, while also joining Lindblad Expeditions as Strategic Innovation Advisor. Like other companies acquired by Lindblad, White Desert and Echo Charlie will continue to operate as a stand-alone offering. Looking to explore homeworking opportunities? National Geographic-Lindblad enters European river cruise market. #expeditioncruising. National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has launched its first European river cruise program aboard the chartered Transcend Connect, with itineraries in Holland, Belgium and the Rhine. National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has entered the European river cruise market, launching its first sailing on August 15 with a new Holland and Belgium itinerary. The inaugural program, Holland and Belgium: Medieval History & Scenic Waterways, includes a seven-night cruise between Amsterdam and Brussels. The itinerary features calls at Kampen, with a land tour to Giethoorn; Arnhem; Rotterdam; The Hague, including a canal cruise to Delft; Kinderdijk; Antwerp; and Ghent. The program is being operated aboard Transcend Connect, a luxury riverboat chartered from Transcend Cruises. The 2025-built vessel carries up to 120 passengers and features panoramic windows, contemporary accommodation and technology designed for European river operations. It is expected to operate on waterways in the Netherlands, Germany, France and other European destinations. National Geographic-Lindblad said the river program will follow the company's expedition model, with an Expedition Leader, field staff and, during the inaugural season, at least one National Geographic Expedition Expert. The onboard team will support guided visits, private tours, tastings, and destination-focused programming centred on local history and culture. Lindblad CEO Trey Byus said the first sailing marked the start of the company's expansion into European waterways. He said the program would allow the operator to apply its expedition approach to continental European destinations. A second itinerary, Rhine River: Castles, Culture and Culinary Delights, will launch in September aboard Transcend Connect. The seven-night program will operate between Cologne and Basel, following the Rhine Gorge and visiting Mainz, Frankfurt and Heidelberg in Germany, along with Strasbourg and Colmar in France's Alsace region. The company's river expansion is scheduled to continue in 2027 with the addition of Transcend Evolve. The second vessel will operate Christmas market cruises, doubling National Geographic-Lindblad's European river fleet and extending the program into the winter season. The move places National Geographic-Lindblad in the competitive European river cruise market while differentiating its product through expedition-style interpretation, expert-led programming, and smaller-group experiences.
