Requirements
  • Active coding credential from AHIMA (Registered Health Information Administrator, Registered Health Information Technician, Certified Coding Specialist, or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-Based) or AAPC (Certified Professional Coder or Certified Professional Coder-Hospital); the credential must be maintained for the duration of the contract.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in inpatient coding.
  • Proficiency with International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification; International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Procedure Coding System; Current Procedural Terminology/Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System; Diagnosis-Related Group assignment; and Evaluation and Management guidelines.
  • Ability to work within VA systems, including VistA/CPRS and VIRR, and comply with HIPAA and VA directives.
  • U.S. citizenship.
Responsibilities
  • Perform inpatient facility coding, including ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, DRG, and E&M coding for all encounters assigned by the VA Portland Health Care System.
  • Access and review health record documentation in the VA VistA/CPRS system and enter codes into the approved coding application.
  • Apply modifiers, Correct Coding Initiative bundling guidelines, and Reason Not Billable designations as appropriate.
  • Code all standard cases within 7 calendar days of receipt or discharge and priority cases within one business day.
  • Clarify conflicting, ambiguous, or nonspecific record information by consulting with the contract coder supervisor.
  • Comply with HIPAA, VA/VHA privacy, security, and records management directives, and complete required VA training before system access and annually thereafter.
  • Comply with AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding.
