Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • CPR, automated external defibrillator, and First Aid certification are required.
  • Certification in the specialty group exercise format is required.
  • National group exercise certification is required for some levels.
  • TB clearance is required.
  • Knowledge of designing, conducting, and implementing safe and effective group exercise classes is required.
  • Knowledge of general health and wellness is required.
  • Employees must complete required YMCA online certifications and trainings, including mandatory Praesidium training.
  • Candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background screening, including criminal and sex offender checks.
Responsibilities
  • Teach assigned group exercise classes and arrange coverage for classes that cannot be taught.
  • Start and end classes on time according to the Group Exercise schedule.
  • Conduct safe and effective exercise classes according to class descriptions, YMCA standards, and guidelines.
  • Communicate with members about the Group Exercise program and specialty classes.
  • Develop relationships with members.
  • Make requested announcements about schedule changes, class substitutes, new classes, workshops, and events.
  • Provide encouragement and motivation to class participants.
  • Provide modifications to meet the needs of participants at all levels.
  • Maintain required CPR, AED, First Aid, specialty, national, and YMCA certifications and trainings as applicable to the position level.
  • Maintain an average of eight participants per class; if the minimum is not maintained for three months, change the format or be replaced by another instructor.
  • Respond to and provide CPR or First Aid during medical emergencies.
  • Complete accident and incident reports for accidents occurring during class and submit them to the supervisor within 24 hours.
  • Dress neatly and professionally in appropriate workout clothing and wear the required name tag and staff shirt when appropriate.
  • Uphold the YMCA mission and its character-development pillars of honesty, caring, responsibility, and respect.

  • Experience in the health or fitness field is preferred.
