Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • At least one year of clinical experience, including at least six months within the past 12 months.
  • Practical knowledge of surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies sufficient to set up surgical materials and position and drape patients for surgery.
  • Practical knowledge and skills sufficient to recognize deviations from normal conditions, make immediate modifications, and notify the ophthalmologist in charge.
  • Knowledge of interrelated assignments and training or work experience sufficient to resolve problems and complete assignments.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Active Basic Life Support certification maintained through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • N95 respirator clearance for fit testing and unrestricted wearing before starting work and annually.
  • Tuberculosis screening within three months of reporting to the client’s site.
  • Required Tdap, MMR, varicella, hepatitis B, and annual influenza immunizations, or the specified antibody titers or documentation where applicable.
  • Annual medical clearance at the client site.
  • Ability to pass a background check and any additional project- or client-required background checks.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English effectively with parties and health care providers.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person and by telephone.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft and Adobe tools, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Acrobat.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently and as part of a team, and use computer and office productivity tools effectively.
  • Ability to work on-site at the client’s facility in Honolulu, Hawaii.
  • Ability to work Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with occasional Saturday, holiday, or outside-normal-hours work as required.
  • Ability to sit for long periods while looking at a computer screen.
  • Ability to travel for business or professional development when required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform technical ophthalmic care using government-furnished facilities, equipment, and supplies for scheduled and unscheduled care.
  • Perform diagnostic examinations and provide timely treatment records and reports; refer patients to an optometrist or ophthalmologist for consultative opinions as needed.
  • Provide ophthalmic services and refractions using specialized knowledge and skills.
  • Assist with pre-operative evaluations and diagnostic testing, including corneal topography and pachymetry.
  • Set up operating rooms, provide equipment and instruments for ophthalmic surgery cases, and maintain a sterile surgical environment.
  • Ensure the laser is operational and assist the surgeon with laser equipment during laser refractive surgery procedures.
  • Provide intra-operative support as a surgical assistant and scrub assistant.
  • Assist optometrists and ophthalmologists with routine and specialty contact lens care.
  • Provide post-operative support by disposing of contaminated supplies, cleaning and sterilizing instruments, sending damaged equipment for service or replacement, and preparing incident reports when indicated.
  • Assist with post-operative refractions and diagnostic testing under optometrist or ophthalmologist guidance.
  • Provide and document telephone assistance to patients according to Military Treatment Facility protocols.
  • Attend department meetings to review and evaluate patient care and treatment.
  • Participate in clinical research as directed by the Director of the Laser Refractive Surgery Center.
  • Provide clinical education and instruction to ophthalmology, optometry, and Physician Assistant students and residents rotating through Ophthalmology Services.
  • Maintain professional appearance and conduct; follow client and employer policies and procedures.
  • Draft and deliver additional reports as required.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
