Requirements
  • Requires advanced shop mathematics and the ability to use complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas, and adjustable measuring instruments.
  • Requires broad training in a recognized trade or craft, equivalent to a complete accredited, indentured apprenticeship or high school plus two years of technical college education.
  • Requires two to three years of effective experience.
  • Requires a valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check.
  • Requires successful completion of employment background checks in accordance with University policies.
Responsibilities
  • Service, maintain, repair, and replace domestic and commercial heating and ventilating systems and auxiliary components.
  • Service, maintain, repair, and replace controls and sensing devices for domestic and commercial heating and ventilating systems and auxiliary components, including changeovers.
  • Install and maintain chilled-water air-conditioning systems and related controls.
  • Install and maintain combination heating and air-cooling systems and related heat controls.
  • Service, maintain, and replace chilled-water coils.
  • Inspect, maintain, repair, and install building heating supply and return lines; check temperatures in condensing lines and traps; repair or replace traps as required using temperature-sensing and recording equipment; and clean, repair, or replace strainers, valves, and other fittings.
  • Adjust building and room controls to maintain prescribed temperatures on heat and reheat systems, including operations requiring heat or reheat in all seasons.
  • Inspect condensate stations to ensure proper heating-system operation; repair, adjust, or replace controls; and repair or replace condensate tanks as necessary.
  • Refer repair problems involving other trades to the supervisor as necessary, including loss of power and pump or motor problems in the distribution system past the tank.
  • Inspect, clean, repair, calibrate, and install condensate meters.
  • Service, maintain, repair, and install air-handling equipment, including univents, fan-coil units, exhaust fans, makeup-air fans, unit heaters, and air-handling units for single and multiple zones; lubricate equipment, clean filters and coils, change belts, bearing cages, and blading, balance air-handling equipment, and install and adjust pulleys.
  • Service, maintain, repair, and install dampers, drives, control mechanisms, and sensing devices; inspect and repair ducting.
  • Service, maintain, repair, and install converters, radiators, radiation units, and coils, including valving, traps, strainers, and unit tubing.
  • Install and maintain filtering and trapping stations in pneumatic air-supply lines.
  • Make temporary repairs to oil burners and systems.
  • Assist oil-burner mechanics as necessary.
  • Install, maintain, and repair humidification-system equipment.
  • Work with the lead technician on complicated repairs and the construction of new or special units.
  • Direct the work of lower-grade employees and apprentices as required.
  • Operate a motor vehicle as required.
