Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, and a registered nurse (RN) license in the District of Columbia are required.
  • Three to five years of nursing experience in a hospital, clinic, or similar healthcare setting are required.
  • Work in compliance with Human Subject Protection, patient confidentiality requirements under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
Responsibilities
  • Serve as Clinical Research Nurse 1 for oncology clinical trials conducted in the Lombardi Clinical Trials Office of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University.
  • Coordinate assigned clinical trials throughout the trial lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with investigators in recruiting and selecting study participants; document and collect data for protocol screening, and determine compliance with eligibility requirements.
  • Interface with study participants and obtain and document informed consent according to protocol, institutional policies, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Coordinate or conduct study-related procedures and assessments while maintaining protocol integrity and patient safety and following Good Clinical Practice guidelines.
  • Assist in assessment, management, and coordination across outpatient, inpatient, and home care, including triaging phone calls, managing symptoms, and proactively communicating with patients.
  • Document all study-related activity, including medical data, in participant medical records and, when applicable, patient research charts, in compliance with protocol, sponsor, and departmental requirements.
  • Conduct follow-up with study participants according to established standards and protocols.
  • Provide clinical and administrative nursing support to Clinical Research Coordinators and other Clinical Research Nurse positions.
  • Ensure site compliance with research protocols by reviewing regulatory requirements and confirming appropriate methods, practices, and procedures for research activities.
  • Coordinate collection of research specimens per protocol requirements with Clinical Research Coordinators.
  • Educate patients about clinical trial participation, treatment, potential side effects, and required testing.
  • Schedule and conduct in-service training for appropriate staff on assigned clinical trials.
  • Regularly update the Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS) with patient information and key dates to support financial management of clinical trials with Clinical Research Coordinators.
  • Collaborate with Data Coordinators to ensure clinical trial documentation is complete and accurate, and assist with timely query resolution.
  • Document and report serious adverse events according to protocol and institutional policy.
  • Liaise with hospital staff, physicians, the Institutional Review Board (IRB), review committees, the clinical research finance team, and auditors.
  • Liaise with sponsors during study start-up activities and participate in site initiation visits, monitoring visits, and audits.
  • Identify potential barriers to patient and physician participation in clinical trials and develop and implement methods to alleviate those barriers.
  • Participate in meetings, task forces, and committees as assigned.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and adhere to Georgetown University Medical Center philosophies, policies, and standard operating procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Preference for nursing experience in inpatient or Intensive Care Unit settings.
  • At least one year of clinical research experience is preferred.
  • At least one year of oncology experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of clinical research, research processes, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is preferred.
