For this role, we prefer candidates who can work from our New York City headquarters but will also consider those who can work out of our Washington, D.C. or Los Angeles bureau. You will report to the Engineering Manager.

You will Brainstorm and propose new ideas to help our journalists report and tell stories

You will Oversee software features from technical design through live operation

You will Contribute to project research and technical design as part of your project team

You will Ensure features you create are reliable, scalable and secure, in partnership with your project team

You will Deploy your code in collaboration with the broader team

You will Collaborate with teams including graphics, design and the newsroom to create efficient and usable workflows

You will Work with newsroom partners to explore bold reporting avenues relating to data, documents or novel story forms

You will Ensure that systems provide clear and accurate information to reporters and readers

You will Sometimes work around breaking news deadlines

You have 3+ years of experience building web applications

1+year of experience with SQL databases

2+ years of experience with JavaScript or Node.js

1+ year of experience with Google Cloud services or similar technologies
- 1+ year of experience with TypeScript or experience with another typed language

You have demonstrated experience working as part of a team: collaborating and communicating with your teammates

You don’t need to have to have worked in journalism, but you experience approaching a problem from different angles, analyzing pros and cons of different solutions about the news and bringing new information and experiences to The New York Times readers
This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$104,000—$130,000 USD
