Netflix also includes a children’s experience within the membership, offering PIN-protected parental controls and the ability to block specific titles to ensure a safe viewing environment for younger viewers. Unlike many competitors, Netflix focuses on an ad-free viewing experience and a large, continuously refreshed library across multiple devices. Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Capital Management has disclosed a new Netflix position of 3.15 million shares, representing 4.9% of the fund's portfolio. This marks a notable reversal after Ackman sold his entire Netflix stake in 2022 at a loss exceeding $400 million following the streamer's first subscriber decline in a decade. In Pershing Square's mid-2026 investor letter, the firm stated that "Netflix has since effectively won the streaming wars." Netflix now serves over 325 million paid subscribers worldwide, nearly double its closest competitor. The investment case centres on Netflix's cash generation, with the company converting close to 90% of earnings into free cash flow. Netflix's ad-supported tier is expected to generate $3 billion annually by end-2026, roughly double the previous year. Second-quarter revenue reached $12.56 billion, up 13.37% year-over-year.
Netflix plans to close two gaming studios, including one in Hollywood. Aug. 14, 2026 11:06 AM PT See more from the L.A. Times in Google Search. Set Los Angeles Times as preferred Netflix said it is in the process of closing two of its gaming studios, as the division is making another round of organizational changes. The Los Gatos, Calif., streamer said it closed the Hollywood-based gaming studio Night School, the maker of narrative games like "Oxenfree," on Thursday and has proposed to close Helsinki, Finland-based gaming studio Moonloot. Night School was the first game developer Netflix purchased in 2021 as it expanded into gaming. The streamer was under pressure by investors to diversify its content to attract more customers, after experiencing two quarters of subscriber losses in 2022. Night School viewed the acquisition at the time as "such a natural pairing" as the gaming studio wanted to stretch its narrative aspirations on original games and Netflix has a reputation of giving TV and film creators an "unprecedented canvas" to bring entertainment to millions of people, according to a blog post on its website. Nov. 14, 2025 In an email, a Netflix spokesperson said it is eliminating roles because the company believes it can operate more strategically and efficiently in its games business. The spokesperson declined to provide the number of workers affected. Last year, the company shut down Boss Fight Entertainment, one of the gaming studios it acquired in 2022. Games on Netflix have had mixed results. At the end of 2024, Epic Games executive Alain Tascan joined Netflix as president of the division and under his leadership, it has focused on key areas including kids, party games like "Netflix Minigolf," narrative games and mainstream games like "FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition." The company also removed some games in part because they did not have high engagement from its library. Last year, Netflix unveiled several party games including "Boggle Party" and "Pictionary: Game Night." In June, Netflix released a narrative game made by Night School called "Unhinged" about a woman who is trapped inside her apartment during a hurricane and is trying to find safety. Voice actors in the game include Zoë Kravitz and Sadie Sink. In a July earnings presentation, Co-CEO Greg Peters reminded analysts of the market opportunity for games, with $150 billion in consumer spending not including ad revenue or markets in China and Russia. He said the streamer is seeing solid numbers from its cloud games such as "FIFA" and "Unhinged" and higher adoption and retention in the cloud games than mobile games. He also said there has been strong engagement and growth from kid games. "We're just getting started here," Peters said. "We're scratching the surface in terms of what we think the total potential of the space offers for us." Oct. 24, 2022 The layoffs come as Netflix stock has declined 37% from a year ago. Investors are concerned about how much time people are spending on Netflix compared with rivals like YouTube. YouTube represents about 14% of streaming-watch time by U.S. viewers on TVs, compared with Netflix's 8% in May, according to Nielsen. In addition to games, Netflix has added other types of content to its streaming service over the years including live events like NFL football games and video podcasts. More to read. 'Sid & Zoey': Netflix orders teen gothic romance series. Aug. 14 (UPI) - Netflix is developing Sid & Zoey, a new teen gothic romance series. The streaming service announced Friday that it has ordered the mystery, romance and supernatural horror drama as part of its growing YA slate of TV series and films. Sid & Zoey is created by Willow and Solo: A Star Wars Story writer Jon Kasdan, who will serve as writer, showrunner and executive producer. John Shiban, J.J. Abrams, Rachel Rusch Rich, Jason Blum, James Wan and Rob Hackett are also on board as executive producers. The new series will consist of eight episodes and follow Sid, "a seductive, sophisticated, and amoral" teen from New York who is sent to live with a police chief in an idyllic Mississippi town. The chief's family includes his "sharp-witted, punk-rock" daughter, Zoey. "Resisting their mutual attraction, Sid and Zoey find themselves drawn into a dark, hidden world beneath the town's picture-postcard facade - and a paranormal puzzle that may well get them killed (if they don't kill each other first)," an official synopsis reads. Casting has yet to be announced. Sid & Zoey follows popular Netflix YA titles including Stranger Things, Wednesday, One Piece and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Other YA projects in development include the hockey drama The Sticks and the prep school drama Crew Girl.
Netflix has shut down two video game studios, Night School Studio and Moonloot Studio, just six weeks after Night School released its horror game Unhinged. Night School, a Los Angeles-based studio acquired by Netflix in 2021, previously developed the award-winning Oxygenfree series. Helsinki-based Moonloot was developing an Animal Crossing-style social simulation game. Netflix attributed the closures to shifting priorities toward kids' gaming, party games, and mainstream titles like FIFA. A Netflix representative stated the company aims "to be more focused in our execution" and is making organisational changes to match new priorities. Jobs were cut from the internal game team, though specific numbers were not disclosed. The closures continue Netflix's gaming restructuring, following previous shutdowns of Team Blue Studio and Boss Fight, and the sale of Spry Fox.
Netflix shuts down Night School Studio, Oxenfree developer, after 5 years. Netflix has closed Night School Studio and Helsinki's Moonloot, cutting further jobs across its internal games team as it narrows its gaming focus. Netflix has shut down Night School Studio - the Los Angeles-based indie behind Oxenfree and Afterparty - alongside Helsinki studio Moonloot, as the streaming giant continues to scale back its first-party game development operation. The closures were first reported by Game File on August 13, 2026, and confirmed by Netflix to multiple outlets. An unspecified number of additional jobs are also being cut across Netflix's internal games team. Night School's five-year run under Netflix. Netflix acquired Night School Studio in September 2021, making it the first games studio to join the Netflix team as the company made its initial push into interactive entertainment. Founded in 2014 by Sean Krankel and Adam Hines, alums of Telltale Games and Disney Interactive Studios respectively, Night School made its name with the mystery adventure game Oxenfree. Under Netflix, the studio continued to produce narrative-driven titles. There it produced Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, the Black Mirror: Thronglets app, and Unhinged, a smartphone-controlled horror game that landed roughly six weeks ago. The 30-minute horror narrative launched on June 30 and featured a big-name cast, including Sadie Sink, Zoe Kravitz, and Troy Baker. The timing of the closure is particularly jarring. The game was hailed by Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters in a call with investors, citing "really solid numbers." Six weeks later, Night School is gone. Moonloot never got to ship a game. Netflix also reportedly plans to shut down Helsinki studio Moonloot Games, which the company founded in September 2022 to build original mobile titles. Moonloot was led by former Digital Chocolate, EA and Zynga exec Marko Lastikka, and job ads from 2023 suggested it was developing an Animal Crossing-like game. Unlike Night School, Moonloot never got the chance to release anything under Netflix's banner. Netflix's gaming retreat, by the numbers. | Studio | Founded/Acquired | Status | Last Game | | Night School | Acquired 2021 | Closed Aug 2026 | Unhinged (Jun 2026) | | Moonloot | Founded 2022 | Closed Aug 2026 | None released | | Team Blue | ~2022 | Closed Oct 2024 | None released | | Spry Fox | Acquired ~2022 | Sold back Dec 2025 | Cozy Grove series | | Boss Fight | Acquired | Closed Oct 2025 | Squid Game mobile | With this week's closure of Night School and Moonloot, Netflix has now shut down or sold all but one of its studios. These new shutdowns are the latest in a series of moves that have whittled down Netflix's internal game business, which now consists of Next Games, based in Helsinki, as well as a gaming team that works with external developers. A strategic narrowing. Netflix has been clear about its new direction. This is all in the name of prioritizing kids gaming, party games, narrative experiences and mainstream titles like June's FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition, a Netflix spokesperson told Game File. The company told Game File: "We see an opportunity to be more focused in our execution, so we are making organizational changes to the business to match those priorities." The FIFA World Cup game was developed by a third-party studio, Refactor Games, which laid off 85 percent of its staff in early August. The broader industry context is grim: studio closures and mass layoffs have become a recurring headline across the sector since 2024, touching Bungie, Battlefield Studios, Supermassive, and multiple Xbox-affiliated teams. What this means for Oxenfree fans. For players who discovered Night School's work through Oxenfree, the original 2016 game remains one of the most distinctive supernatural adventure games of its era - and it is still available to buy outside of Netflix's ecosystem. If you have yet to play it, now is a fitting time to revisit where Night School began before its doors close for good. Live deal tracker
