Requirements
  • Knowledge of medium- and high-voltage electrical systems, including Battery Energy Storage System, microgrid, and inverter-based resource configurations, protection and control philosophies, and utility-scale grounding and electrical safety design.
  • Knowledge of electrical topologies and distribution systems.
  • Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards, including the National Electrical Safety Code, National Electrical Code, National Fire Protection Association standards, ANSI, utility interconnection standards, IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, IEEE 1584, IEEE 519, and IEEE 80, with the ability to apply requirements through code analysis and system design.
  • Knowledge of power systems engineering and design software for short-circuit, arc flash, harmonic, and power flow analysis, equipment sizing, and electromagnetic transient simulation, such as ETAP, SKM, ASPEN, PSCAD, or equivalent tools.
  • Working knowledge of Battery Energy Storage System, microgrid, and inverter-based resource interconnection requirements, including protection coordination, anti-islanding and transfer-trip schemes, and utility interconnection processes such as LGIA and SGIA.
  • Hands-on experience with protective relay platforms such as SEL or an equivalent platform, including settings development, coordination, and field commissioning support.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams, along with strong file-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to leverage artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to streamline workflows and optimize operational processes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment through communication, organization, self-motivation, proactiveness, and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to follow company and site safety requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences and serve as a client-facing point of contact.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer license in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least five years of progressive energy storage or power systems engineering experience, with demonstrated depth in protection and control design.
  • Experience supporting engineering delivery on medium- to high-voltage Battery Energy Storage System, microgrid, or inverter-based resource interconnection projects, including in an engineer-of-record support capacity.
  • Hands-on protective relay experience, including settings development and coordination.
  • Direct experience navigating LGIA and SGIA processes and utility interconnection requirements.
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary Battery Energy Storage System or power systems design and working with utilities or owner engineering teams on utility, renewable, data center, or industrial projects.
Responsibilities
  • Perform detailed design, analysis, and engineering of Battery Energy Storage System, microgrid, and other inverter-based resource systems while ensuring compliance with customer requirements, utility requirements, industry standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate Battery Energy Storage System and inverter-based resource designs into substation, generation, and grid interconnection infrastructure.
  • Support technical scoping, design, and utility or developer coordination for medium- and high-voltage Battery Energy Storage System, microgrid, and inverter-based resource interconnections, including protection philosophy, interconnection studies, and compliance with IEEE 1547 and IEEE 2800.
  • Contribute to engineering approaches, design standards, and technical risk management.
  • Support project delivery as engineer of record or in support of the engineer of record, contributing to technical accuracy, constructability, and code compliance.
  • Apply and maintain engineering standards, design criteria, and quality expectations for energy storage work.
  • Prepare Battery Energy Storage System one-line, three-line, and alternating-current/direct-current schematics.
  • Prepare physical layouts, equipment arrangements, and site plans for containerized or modular Battery Energy Storage System installations.
  • Develop direct-current architecture including battery racks, inverters or power conversion systems, and medium-voltage collection systems.
  • Design grounding systems and electrical safety systems.
  • Develop protection and control philosophies, relay schemes, and coordination.
  • Develop Battery Energy Storage System and microgrid interconnection one-lines, protection and control schemes, and anti-islanding or transfer-trip logic.
  • Coordinate fire detection and suppression and thermal management with mechanical disciplines.
  • Develop and review equipment specifications for battery modules, power conversion systems, transformers, switchgear, protection relays, and communications or supervisory control and data acquisition systems.
  • Perform complex engineering studies with general guidance.
  • Perform or direct short-circuit, arc flash, harmonic, power flow, and electromagnetic transient studies, including fault, harmonic, and dynamic contributions from Battery Energy Storage Systems and other inverter-based resources.
  • Support interconnection application processes and LGIA or SGIA coordination with utilities, developers, and Battery Energy Storage System vendors.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards and utility requirements and help resolve technical conflicts and ambiguities.
  • Use AutoCAD and Revit to prepare drawings and visual aids.
  • Coordinate the project design team, including resource forecasting.
  • Identify potential project scope changes and help develop strategies to minimize impacts and control deviations from estimated costs and deadlines.
  • Work closely with clients to understand project requirements, provide technical insights, and support client satisfaction throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support resolution of design, construction, and field issues, escalating matters to leadership when business or contractual risk requires involvement.
  • Support construction, testing, commissioning, and energization through requests for information, field engineering, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Participate in technical reviews, design meetings, and client presentations.
  • Prepare project design and construction documents.
  • Prepare project progress reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Update and maintain shop-drawing and request-for-information logs.
  • Manage personal hours using company tools.
  • Lead strategic use of technology, digital platforms, and artificial-intelligence-enabled tools to improve workflow automation, forecasting, documentation, reporting, and quality processes.
  • Support adoption of advanced analytics, data visualization tools, and digital construction management platforms.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to align technology solutions with company standards for data security, privacy, and operational integrity.
  • Complete assigned tasks and deliverables on time and on budget.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least eight years of progressive energy storage or power systems engineering experience is preferred.
  • Direct, hands-on experience on at least one Battery Energy Storage System, microgrid, or inverter-based resource interconnection project from application or study through protection design and commissioning.
  • Working knowledge of IEEE 2800 and/or IEEE 1547 interconnection standards for inverter-based resources.
  • Electromagnetic transient simulation experience using PSCAD or an equivalent tool.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 855 or battery energy storage fire protection and life safety design.
