Responsibilities
  • Establish the direction and emerging priorities of CEMC administration with the Director and Associate Director and participate as a member of the Director's Advisory Group.
  • Plan for growth of CEMC initiatives and oversee implementation of new and emerging programs and expansion or diversification of current programs and initiatives.
  • Manage the creation, maintenance, and adherence to CEMC strategic, long-range, and operational plans, including human and equipment resourcing, funding viability, and financial stability.
  • Build frameworks that enable employees to create new processes and improve existing processes in compliance with best practices and legislative requirements.
  • Work with the Dean of Mathematics Office to align CEMC's mission and activities with those of the Faculty of Mathematics and the University of Waterloo.
  • Identify and evaluate risks to program participants, stakeholders, staff, infrastructure, finances, and reputation, and recommend and implement mitigation measures with the Director and Associate Director.
  • Conduct reviews and audits of CEMC financial procedures and transactions to ensure strong internal controls and effective financial accountability.
  • Monitor and prepare reports for CEMC operating, endowment, and trust funds, identifying issues and risks.
  • Identify training and performance needs across the unit and develop and implement training initiatives for administrative staff with the Operations Manager.
  • Review non-routine contracts and agreements and consult central units such as Legal Services, Secretariat, Finance, and Human Resources when appropriate.
  • Develop business plans for new outreach programs and initiatives with the Director and Associate Director.
  • Provide strategic advice and recommend courses of action regarding risk management to the Director, Associate Director, and Director's Advisory Group.
  • Lead and provide guidance to program audit processes, provide management responses, and track actions.
  • Oversee recruitment, evaluation, job descriptions, reclassification, promotion, professional development, and retention processes for direct-report staff.
  • Oversee crisis management and unit compliance with health and safety policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.
  • Support the Operations Manager in developing guidelines, processes, and training requirements for faculty, staff, and volunteers.
  • Manage human-resources projects, including administrative-structure reviews, job-description and level management, and redistribution of duties through change-management practices.
  • Oversee scheduling of CEMC staff responsibilities, including redeployment during peak periods.
  • Coach and mentor staff managers, including conflict management, mediation, and performance improvement plans, and administer the salary-increase pool process for faculty and staff in CEMC.
  • Provide the Director and Associate Director with staffing and systems support for faculty recruitment, evaluation, promotion, and retention.
  • Promote team cohesion, motivation, customer-focused service, continuous quality improvement, and lifelong learning.
  • Oversee technical and computing management of CEMC.
  • Oversee the events and marketing plan and execution for CEMC initiatives.
  • Support the Operations Manager with strategic management of the contest process serving more than 250,000 registrations globally.
  • Guide management and execution of outreach events, including workshops and conferences, while identifying new initiatives and building on successes.
  • Prepare multi-year projections of CEMC's financial position across all funds, identify concerns, and propose solutions.
  • Source development opportunities and funding potential to support the sustainability of CEMC's strategic plan and long-term vision.
  • Investigate non-corporate funding sources for CEMC.
  • Create proposals and co-author reports for external funding agencies and individuals.
  • Provide oversight and one-over-level approvals for the development and preparation of budgets for all CEMC activities.
  • Develop strategies to allocate endowment and trust resources to the operating budget during financial constraints.
  • Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the CEMC Director's Advisory Group, trust and endowment reporting, and research-grant reporting.
  • Ensure faculty and staff understand and correctly follow financial policies and funding terms of reference.
  • Oversee the travel-expense budget for domestic and international school visits.
  • Manage revenue, prepare monthly reconciliation reports, identify risks to operational revenue stability, and predict cash flow and corresponding resourcing needs.
  • Manage development and oversee multi-year marketing and brand campaigns, including audience and market definition, environmental scans, content marketing strategy, paid media strategy, and cross-channel tactical plans.
  • Provide strategic direction for brand cohesion by overseeing web content, branded event tools and supplies, digital media, print, and direct touchpoints.
  • Oversee efficient and equitable use of CEMC facilities and equipment, including space requirements, with the Office of the Dean of Mathematics.
  • Authorize computing hardware purchases and other equipment needs and repairs and ensure inter-departmental funding transfers related to rollover agreements.
  • Direct the Information Systems group regarding CEMC's strategic needs and direction for existing and new custom-built large software systems.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff in interpreting and applying University of Waterloo policies, guidelines, and practices.

The Student Venture Fund (SVF) at the University of Waterloo provides students with hands-on venture capital training by evaluating startups, conducting market research, valuing companies, performing due diligence, and making investment recommendations under supervision from finance professors and industry mentors. Students work through the full investment process, presenting ideas and executing approved investments as part of a live early-stage portfolio. The program differs from typical courses by offering an end-to-end, real-money learning experience with ongoing mentorship and industry interaction. Its goal is to develop practical VC skills in students while building real-world investment experience and expanding connections with the startup and investment community.
