Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED with at least 1 year of related health care experience is preferred for Non-Philadelphia County Jefferson campuses.
  • High School Diploma/GED along with completion of a supervised mental health or addiction practicum, completion of 12 college credits in the social sciences, and 2 years of experience in mental health or addictions care is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in humanities or social services and 1 year of experience in mental health or addictions care is required.
  • Knowledge of behavioral treatment techniques and procedures is required.
  • Ability to manage and maintain high-quality behavioral therapeutic interventions for a diverse mental health population is required.
  • Familiarity with and knowledge of the operating principles and code of ethics for Jefferson Health, with the ability to apply this understanding appropriately to healthcare-related situations, is required.
  • Knowledge of the relevance of health information and appropriate documentation requirements is required.
  • Knowledge of risks faced by patients in a healthcare environment and the ability to take steps to reduce those risks is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40–50 pounds, push or pull patients on beds or stretchers, perform lateral transfers, and frequently or continuously stand and walk is required.
  • Ability to perform role-specific activities including kneeling, bending, squatting, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in delivering care, observe patient behaviors, and assist with various aspects of patient care.
  • Work closely with the registered nurse and report changes in a patient's mood or behavior in a timely fashion.
  • Recognize patients and their families or designated care partners while providing safe, compassionate, and coordinated care based on personal preferences, priorities, needs, cultural beliefs, and values.
  • Communicate with and support the interprofessional team, patients, families, and designated care partners through written communication, telephone conversations, and other verbal interactions.
  • Use therapeutic communication skills and offer emotional support to patients.
  • Use verbal de-escalation skills in response to observed patient behaviors and follow established protocols for safe and effective management.
  • Ensure patient safety by observing patient behaviors and completing scheduled rounding.
  • Lead or assist with group activities such as community meetings, recreational groups, and other unit activities.
  • Assist the registered nurse with patient-care activities following established unit protocols and competencies.
  • Maintain a safe, neat, and clean patient-care environment.
  • Assist patients with personal care, ambulation, and feeding, and encourage independent completion when possible.
  • Provide direct observation for the safety of assigned patients when needed.
  • Complete required documentation accurately and efficiently in accordance with hospital policy and department guidelines.
  • Participate in unit, hospital, and division meetings and work groups as assigned.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff when needed.
