  • Completion of the Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
Responsibilities
  • Observe sheep and calves in an intensive care setting and report changes to veterinary staff or a supervisor.
  • Notify the on-call veterinarian in emergency situations and take immediate action as appropriate, including controlling bleeding or seizures and administering oxygen or medication.
  • Monitor animals with artificial organs and associated equipment, respond properly to alarms and status changes, and notify the veterinarian or on-call engineer of issues.
  • Under veterinary staff direction, use aseptic techniques to administer medications orally, intramuscularly, and intravenously.
  • Draw up, dilute, or mix medications at proper levels and monitor blood pressure and heart rate for abnormal conditions.
  • Collect blood, urine, and fecal samples and conduct directed diagnostic tests, including blood gases, hematocrits, and clot times.
  • Maintain records of animal data, vital signs, medications, intake, and output, and follow orders written by veterinary staff and the supervisor.
  • Restrain, position, and prepare animals for medical and research procedures.
  • Assist with veterinary treatments and activities as directed.
  • Operate and perform routine user maintenance on equipment such as blood pressure monitors and fluid pumps, and notify the supervisor of malfunctions.
  • Prepare rooms for animals returning from surgery and ensure the availability of stanchions, clean mats, oxygen tanks, and other recovery equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain regularly used supplies, request replenishment as necessary, and recommend new equipment or supplies to the supervisor.
  • Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean and orderly condition, keep animals clean, and promptly remove animal waste.
  • Attend technician meetings and training sessions covering laboratory animal care and the research and use of animals in biomedical research.
