- At least 5 years of experience managing shop operations in a commercial repair environment such as fleet maintenance, diesel repair, heavy equipment service, or trucking maintenance facilities.
- At least 3 years of experience directly supervising and managing a team of at least 3 technicians in a commercial fleet maintenance environment.
- Experience using fleet management software or comparable platforms to track vehicle maintenance schedules, manage work orders and parts inventory, generate reports, and handle daily communication and operational documentation.
- Experience managing compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and Department of Transportation requirements, including inspection records, driver qualification files, and maintenance documentation.
- Ability to prepare for or undergo a state or federal audit and ensure regulatory compliance across shop operations and fleet maintenance records.
- Execute complete shop start-ups for newly awarded contracts, including facility setup, tool and equipment procurement, parts inventory establishment, and fleet intake processes.
- Develop and maintain preventive maintenance programs that meet or exceed state, federal, Department of Transportation, and district requirements.
- Ensure maximum daily vehicle availability through maintenance scheduling, efficient repair workflows, and proactive fleet health monitoring.
- Manage shop operations across all maintenance activities.
- Partner with the Location Manager to coordinate fleet readiness and support operational scheduling needs.
- Monitor, analyze, and improve maintenance key performance indicators, including preventive maintenance inspection compliance, mean distance between failures, out-of-service time, and first-time fix rates.
- Lead a safety-first maintenance culture protecting technicians, drivers, students, and the broader community.
- Ensure compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Department of Transportation, California Highway Patrol Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
- Maintain maintenance records, inspection documentation, and regulatory files for audits.
- Maintain maintenance budget accountability in alignment with company financial guidelines.
- Collaborate with Human Resources and Recruiting teams to execute hiring plans for technician positions.
- Develop and coach maintenance technicians through mentoring, skills training, and career growth opportunities.
- Oversee daily shop operations, including work order management, parts inventory control, vendor relationships, and warranty claim processing.
- Establish and adjust maintenance priorities based on operational demands, parts availability, and fleet requirements.
- Maintain organized, safe, clean, and efficient shop facilities with proper tool control and hazardous materials management.
- Experience managing in a unionized collective bargaining agreement environment.
- Experience managing through rapid organizational growth or major management or structural changes.
- A valid commercial driver's license with the ability to operate commercial fleet vehicles.
- Automotive Service Excellence certifications or manufacturer/dealer technical training credentials.

Zum has opened a new Seattle North Lot facility to reduce commute times for school bus drivers living north of the city. The student mobility company will host a grand opening celebration and hiring event on 31 July at 4601 Shilshole Avenue NW. The event will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, panel discussion with current drivers, on-site interviews, and job offers. Zum is currently filling hundreds of school bus driver positions ahead of the new school year. The new location is part of Zum's partnership with Seattle Public Schools, through which it serves thousands of students.
