The Extreme Vehicle Dynamics Control (EVDC) team develops innovative algorithms for cars operating at and beyond the limits of handling, in both fully-autonomous and shared control scenarios. We do this across a range of experimental platforms: from a race-modified Toyota Supra to a low-speed, over-actuated custom vehicle.

About the internship

While traditional model-based approaches to control work well the majority of the time in these extreme driving scenarios, there are still areas for improvement, particularly where the simplified model does not fully capture the situation. In shared control scenarios, this is complicated by the addition of uncertainty in judging the driver’s intent.

The intern for our team would explore how we might augment this approach using modern machine learning techniques. Depending on their research interests, the intern would focus on vehicle control, driver modeling, or the intersection of both of these topics. They will perform a literature review, familiarize themselves with the EVDC work and data, propose and develop a well-scoped approach, and, by the end of the 12-week period, implement it on one of our test platforms.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $45 and $65/hour for California-based roles; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
