VELUX & WWF complete 450,000 hectares of forest protection. August 28, 2026 VELUX completes its WWF forest portfolio in Madagascar, Vietnam and Uganda, as CEO Lars Petersson emphasises the need for conservation and decarbonisation WWF states that forests are home to more than 80% of the world's land-based animals, plants and insects. The VELUX Group has established the fourth and final project in its forest protection and conservation portfolio through its 20-year partnership with WWF. The Vanilla Forest project in Northern Madagascar covers 275,000 hectares and joins projects in Vietnam and Uganda focused on forest protection, restoration, biodiversity and community livelihoods. Together, the portfolio covers more than 450,000 hectares and is designed to reduce and remove 4.5 million tonnes of CO[2] once fully implemented. Completing a forest portfolio. The new Vanilla Forest project is located in the Northern Highlands of Madagascar, an area containing biodiverse landscapes, endangered species and communities that depend on sustainable vanilla production. Covering 275,000 hectares, the project aims to focus on protecting existing forests while supporting restoration in degraded areas. It forms the fourth project established under the VELUX's partnership with WWF, which began with a commitment in 2020 to address the company's estimated historical Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint dating back to its foundation in 1941. "Together with WWF, we have now identified the areas where our projects will reduce and remove millions of tonnes of CO2 once they are fully implemented," says Lars Petersson, CEO of the VELUX Group. "Sustainability Mag is convinced that sustainability will continue to shape successful businesses in the future and I am extremely proud that six years into its partnership, Sustainability Mag is on track towards a historic and ambitious target. "Establishing our complete portfolio is an important milestone, yet we remain fully committed to delivering on our targets, taking responsibility for our past, present and future." The portfolio spans tropical forests in Vietnam and Uganda alongside mangrove forests and terrestrial rainforests in Madagascar. Each project is intended to generate benefits for climate, biodiversity and local communities while supporting landscape-scale conservation. Forest protection for climate and nature goals. The VELUX Group's forest projects are classified as beyond value chain mitigation, meaning they sit separately from the company's own decarbonisation activities and value chain emissions. Their purpose is to contribute to wider climate action and nature protection rather than compensate for emissions generated through the company's operations. The projects combine the protection of existing forests with restoration of degraded landscapes, helping to prevent stored CO[2] from being released while increasing the potential for trees to absorb carbon as they grow. "Our forest partnership is an important part of how we take responsibility for our historical footprint, alongside the work we are doing to reduce emissions across our own operations and value chain," Fleming Voetmann, Vice President of Public Affairs and Product Regulatory Affairs, VELUX tells Sustainability Magazine. "Protecting existing forests and restoring degraded areas can deliver significant benefits for climate, nature and local communities. We are proud to support this work at scale and over the long term." The climate benefits are also intended to contribute to the climate goals of the countries where the projects operate. VELUX isn't set to use verified carbon units generated through the partnership to offset its own emissions, maintaining a distinction between its forest investments and corporate emissions reduction efforts. Targeting carbon emissions. The completed portfolio represents a long-term approach to addressing the environmental impacts associated with the company's historical operations. VELUX estimates that the 4.5 million tonnes of CO[2] target reflects the scale of its historical Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint since 1941. WWF forest facts * Forests provide homes for approximately 68% of mammal species, 75% of bird species and 80% of amphibians. * Forests act as carbon sinks, storing around 70% of carbon in the soil, stabilising the global climate * Annually, up to 15 billion trees are cut down across the world. * To date, human activities have led to the loss of around 40% of the world's forests. * Monitored forest vertebrate populations have dropped by 53% since 1970. The company expects the projects to deliver these reductions and removals as they become fully implemented over the course of the 20-year partnership. Establishing the complete portfolio marks a milestone, but implementation, monitoring and conservation activity is due to continue across the four landscapes. "According to the World Economic Forum, more than half of the world's GDP depends on nature, so we need private companies to truly step up in addressing climate change and rapidly growing biodiversity loss," says Mikkel Aarø-Hansen, Secretary General at WWF Denmark. "Sustainability Mag therefore hope that more companies will be inspired by the VELUX Group, which has now reached a major milestone by committing to financing a very ambitious forest protection project in Madagascar. The partnership is also intended to create a platform for bringing additional partners into forest protection and restoration programmes over the coming years. Biodiversity and community benefits. The portfolio extends beyond carbon removal by placing biodiversity and local livelihoods alongside climate action. The Vanilla Forest project, for example, is located in a landscape where communities depend on sustainable vanilla production, linking forest conservation with economic activity. Across the four projects, the focus on tropical, mangrove and terrestrial rainforest ecosystems provides opportunities to protect habitats and support species facing pressure from environmental change and land degradation. The approach also reflects the growing role of private-sector investment in nature protection beyond corporate value chains. With VELUX's forest portfolio now established, the next phase aims to centre on delivering and tracking conservation outcomes across more than 450,000 hectares. Key WWF partnerships. HSBC and WWF have worked together on nature and climate since 2002, with the partnership evolving from conservation funding into programmes addressing climate and nature risks. Their Climate Solutions Partnership with the World Resources Institute has supported renewable energy, agroforestry and climate resilience across Asia. More recently, the organisations have also worked on deforestation risks and environmental crime. WWF and Anheuser-Busch InBev are working together to address water challenges across high-risk watersheds. The partnership builds on work dating back to 2008, when WWF and SABMiller pioneered water footprinting. Current projects across Africa and South America focus on improving water availability and quality, restoring freshwater ecosystems, supporting sustainable agriculture and strengthening community resilience. Marks & Spencer has worked with WWF on sustainability across its food and fashion operations, including responsible sourcing and supply-chain environmental impacts. Earlier initiatives included sustainable seafood, cotton production, freshwater risk and marine conservation. The partnership has also supported wider industry initiatives and policy advocacy, demonstrating how retailer supply chains can become a focus for nature and sustainability action. KPMG International and WWF are working together to support the transition towards a net-zero, nature-positive economy, with people placed at the centre. Their partnership examines how businesses can manage environmental and social impacts during the transition. A 2026 global survey found strong business support for action, while highlighting that relatively few companies currently integrate social considerations into transition plans. AstraZeneca and WWF are working together to protect freshwater ecosystems and encourage stronger water stewardship across the pharmaceutical sector. The partnership focuses on reducing environmental pressures while improving the resilience of freshwater resources. It also aims to demonstrate how pharmaceutical businesses can strengthen water management, supporting healthier ecosystems and communities while addressing the sector's wider environmental dependencies. GSK and WWF are working together to protect and restore freshwater ecosystems across India, Pakistan and Algeria. Reflections from UIA 2026 Barcelona about the Future of the built environment. In Collaboration Published on July 20, 2026 As the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 came to a close in Barcelona, one message resurfaced across debates, exhibitions, talks, and conversations alike: the future of architecture will depend less on definitive answers than on the ability to accept change and collectively question established models. At this year's Congress, under the theme "Becoming. Architectures for a Planet in Transition," architecture was framed as an evolving practice shaped by interdisciplinary dialogue, research, and collaboration. Housing, resource consumption, climate adaptation, and public health emerged as interconnected challenges that no single project, profession, or institution can solve alone. Instead, many discussions focused on existing buildings as a shared resource and on renovation, adaptation, and reuse as opportunities to rethink how architecture responds to changing environmental and social conditions. As Mariona Benedito and Carmen Torres, part of the curatorial team of UIA 2026 Barcelona, explain: ArchDaily has attended lectures by the architects that ArchDaily admire, and ArchDaily, as creators in this congress, propose that ArchDaily learn something new. ArchDaily don't want to listen again to something ArchDaily know. And that's why ArchDaily is making a lot of the sessions debates between two or three people. ArchDaily need friction. Building on the findings presented in the Green Paper The Housing ArchDaily Need for the Future ArchDaily Want, Re:Living explores how renovation can move from isolated projects toward a more structured and scalable approach centered on health, affordability, and sustainability. Like many conversations throughout the Congress, Green Paper and Re:Living leave room for continued debate, testing, and collaboration. Looking at existing buildings as future housing. Across Europe, the demand for housing continues to grow while much of the existing building stock remains underused, outdated, or inefficient. According to the Green Paper, approximately 85% of the buildings that Europe will rely on in 2050 have already been built, suggesting that the built environment already contains significant untapped potential. Developed in collaboration with ARTELIA, BPIE, RISE, and No Objectives, the Green Paper examines how Europe's existing building stock could help address interconnected housing, climate, energy, and health challenges. Drawing on large-scale research into the EU residential building stock, it estimates that renovation, adaptation, reuse, and better use of existing buildings could unlock between 50 and 107 million additional homes while reducing demand for new land, materials, and associated carbon emissions. Published as an invitation to policymakers, researchers, the building industry, and civil society, the Green Paper is intended to encourage discussion on how renovation can be scaled across Europe. Re:Living, developed together with DGJ Architektur and Transsolar, builds on this research by proposing a holistic framework for translating these ideas into practice through four stages: Re:Think, Re:Scope, Re:Design, and Re:Cover. Continuing the conversation. This emphasis on open discussion echoed the wider atmosphere of the Congress. Throughout the week, conversations repeatedly returned to the idea that architecture is shaped through exchange rather than certainty. Instead of presenting universal answers, many sessions encouraged debate across disciplines and perspectives on housing, climate, and urban transformation, all of which require collective responses. Several events organized alongside the Congress reflected this approach from different angles. During Architects, not Architecture (AnA), a global event series co-hosted by VELUX in Barcelona, speakers including Winy Maas from MVRDV, Xu Tiantian from DnA_Design and Architecture, and Arno Brandlhuber from bplus.xyz (b+) and HouseEurope! shifted the focus away from completed projects toward the experiences, influences, and ideas that inform architectural practice. Although each brought a distinct perspective, their conversations frequently returned to opportunities within existing buildings, focusing on reuse, minimal intervention, and transformation as central architectural concerns. As Arno Brandlhuber highlights: You can be successful without building a building. The next generation of architects joined the conversation through the Light of Tomorrow by VELUX student competition, organized in close collaboration with the International Union of Architects (UIA), in which eight finalist teams presented proposals exploring the role of daylight in architecture before an international jury, with the projects discussed through live critique. The winning proposal, Sun the Quilt by students from Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, chosen among 539 daylight projects, illustrates how everyday urban conditions can inspire new architectural responses through a careful integration of daylight, ventilation, and domestic acts. As jury member Níall McLaughlin describes: The architects have gone through a problem, gotten to the bottom of that problem, worked it through, and then made it into something that can live and thrive in the world. Together, these initiatives reflected a broader characteristic of this year's Congress. Whether through research, public debate, or student experimentation, architecture was consistently presented as a discipline that advances through shared inquiry. If Barcelona 2026 demonstrated anything, it was that architecture's most pressing questions cannot be addressed in isolation. The discussions surrounding circularity, housing, resource use, and existing buildings rarely concluded with definitive answers. Instead, they pointed toward ongoing processes of collaboration that extend beyond the duration of the Congress itself. Beyond the formal program, the event and the VELUX x Barcelona Exchange & Experience created a space for exchange between architects, students, researchers, industry leaders, and partners from around the world, through conversations, shared experiences, and encounters with Barcelona's own architectural fabric. The city itself became a backdrop for exploring how ideas around transformation, reuse, and healthier buildings can move from discussion into practice.
