Requirements
- An Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy is required.
- A current Respiratory Therapist license in Michigan is required.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist credentials are required within one year of hire for employees hired after 2004.
- BLS certification is required within three months of hire.
- ACLS, PALS, and NRP certifications are required within one year of hire according to site-specific requirements.
- For BLH and BSH sites, completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program through a certificate, diploma, or Associate degree and five years of experience is required.
- The employee must be able to provide age-specific services to the patient population served.
- The employee must be able to stand and walk regularly, lift light objects up to 50 pounds, assist with heavier patient-moving tasks, and respond quickly during emergencies.
- The employee must complete required in-services, educational activities, and continuing education.
- The employee must be able to work a 12-hour night shift and 36 scheduled hours per week.
Responsibilities
- Initiate and administer respiratory care to patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities and deficiencies according to provider prescriptions and established policies.
- Serve as a respiratory-care resource for providers, nurses, and hospital team members regarding advanced respiratory diagnosis and rehabilitation.
- Provide patients’ respiratory therapy and communicate findings to appropriate personnel.
- Evaluate objective and subjective patient information and discuss conclusions with providers and nurses to resolve patient problems.
- Evaluate invasive and non-invasive blood gases and recommend therapy changes based on arterial blood gas results.
- Communicate ventilator recommendations to providers and nursing based on patient evaluations and blood gases.
- Verify that provider orders are complete and administer therapy accordingly.
- Perform age-specific respiratory therapies according to provider orders, protocols, and guidelines.
- Explain therapy to patients according to their age and learning capabilities.
- Assess patients’ responses to therapy and recommend or modify treatment according to provider direction and respiratory protocols.
- Administer, assess, and titrate oxygen therapy.
- Notify managers, nursing personnel, and providers of adverse patient reactions.
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and assist with Code Blue events.
- Perform appropriate life support according to BLS, ACLS, NRP, and PALS guidelines.
- Assist providers with tracheal intubation or perform it when competency is complete.
- Maintain and stabilize artificial airways, including endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes, through suctioning, securing, and repositioning.
- Use infant and pediatric resuscitation equipment, including PEEP adaptations and pop-off valves, during emergencies.
- Assist with patient and family education as part of the healthcare team.
- Perform pulmonary function testing, electrocardiograms, arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, end-tidal carbon dioxide monitoring, and transcutaneous oximetry.
- Assist with bedside bronchoscopies, intubations, and extubations.
- Perform nasotracheal, endotracheal, and tracheal suctioning and collect samples.
- Assist with patient transport by walking, wheelchair, gurney, crib, or ambulance between facilities when required.
- Communicate patient diagnoses and therapy accurately during change-of-shift reports.
- Charge patients accurately for therapies performed.
- Supervise and instruct Respiratory Care students and complete the required preceptor course.
- Work in response to changes in patient census and relative value units, including overtime and shift changes when department needs require it.
- Maintain and clean respiratory equipment and ensure supply availability.
- Orient and instruct new department personnel, nursing staff, students, and respiratory personnel in Respiratory Care procedures.
- Attend in-services and online learning and complete required education and working requirements.
- Participate in departmental and hospital-wide process improvement, quality assurance, and performance improvement activities.
- Perform related duties as required or assigned according to site-specific needs.
