About the company

LAIKA Studios creates stop-motion feature films by combining handcrafted puppets and sets with digital effects. Its films are produced with a hands-on, artistic approach and use technology such as 3D-printed facial expressions to rapidly prototype puppets, enabling nuanced emotions and quicker iterations; this workflow supports feature-length storytelling with rich visuals. Compared with competitors, LAIKA is privately owned and driven by a passion-project culture led by Travis Knight, prioritizing artistic credibility and critical acclaim over steady commercial profits, and it maintains a focus on technical innovation rather than simply mass production. The company’s goal is to push the boundaries of stop-motion animation through artist-driven projects that receive strong critical recognition, including Academy Award nominations, while maintaining a distinct identity separate from its commercial division, HouseSpecial.

Design Museum to explore the making of LAIKA's Wildwood in new autumn exhibition.

Design Museum to explore the making of LAIKA's Wildwood in new autumn exhibition. 10th September 2026 The handcrafted world of LAIKA is coming to London this autumn, with a new Design Museum exhibition offering a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the studio's latest stop-motion film, Wildwood. Opening on 15th October, LAIKA presents Wildwood: The Exhibition will bring together original props, costumes and filmmaking tools used to create the film, alongside work by its visual artists, model makers and scenic painters. Interactive installations will also reveal how the studio builds its elaborate worlds for the screen. LAIKA, the animation studio behind Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, will release Wildwood in UK and Irish cinemas just over a week after the exhibition opens. The film follows a girl who ventures into a hidden forest in an attempt to rescue her brother. The exhibition gives visitors the chance to see the craft behind that adventure before - or after - encountering the finished world on the big screen. An accompanying Wildwood book will also be available. The Design Museum is extending the exhibition beyond its displays with a programme exploring stop-motion animation. Events include a clay animation workshop for children on 27th October, a Halloween curator tour on 31st October and an adult stop-motion workshop on 14th November. For fans who have wondered how LAIKA turns physical models and miniature environments into its distinctive animated worlds, the exhibition offers a closer look at the objects and techniques normally hidden behind the camera. The editorial unit Photo: Courtesy of Laika LAIKA presents Wildwood: The Exhibition is at the Design Museum from 15th October until 10th January 2027. U.S. Premiere of 'Wildwood' to open AFI fest 2026.

U.S. Premiere of 'Wildwood' to open AFI fest 2026. September 9, 2026 Today, the American Film Institute (AFI) announced that the U.S. Premiere of LAIKA Studios' Wildwood will open the 40th edition of AFI FEST presented by Canva on Wednesday, October 21. "AFI is honored to celebrate Wildwood as the Opening Night Film of the 40th Annual AFI FEST," said Bob Gazzale, AFI President & CEO. "At a time when the world needs artistic inspiration more than ever, Wildwood comes to the rescue by inviting audiences to a hand-crafted, endlessly imaginative world that both dazzles and delights." The stop-motion fantasy is directed and produced by Academy Award nominee Travis Knight, written by Academy Award nominee Chris Butler, based on the novel by Colin Meloy, and features cinematography by Academy Award nominee Caleb Deschanel (AFI Class of 1969). The voice cast is led by Peyton Elizabeth Lee and Jacob Tremblay, alongside Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan, Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Angela Bassett, Awkwafina, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal, Tom Waits and Academy Award nominee Richard E. Grant. "Sixteen years is a long time to carry a story with you. And yet, sometimes that's what stories ask of the people who tell them. Wildwood was built slowly, painstakingly, by hundreds of extraordinary artists and craftspeople who gave something of themselves to this movie. For so long, this strange and beautiful world belonged only to those of us fortunate enough to wander through it together. To finally emerge blinking into the daylight at AFI FEST is a profound honor," said Knight. "AFI has a long tradition of championing ambitious and distinctive filmmaking, and the filmmakers with the audacity, imagination and occasional poor judgment to attempt something genuinely different and sincere. We're grateful to be among them. For 16 years, we've been finding our way through Wildwood. What a privilege it is to finally welcome others inside." Synopsis: After her baby brother is abducted by a murder of crows, headstrong teenager Prue McKeel (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) launches a desperate rescue mission into the Impassable Wilderness - an enchanted forest hidden just beyond Portland, Oregon. Joined by her hapless but loyal classmate Curtis Mehlberg (Jacob Tremblay), Prue navigates a world of talking animals, bandits and powerful figures driven by grief and ambition. As the pair is drawn into a conflict threatening the balance of the forest itself, Prue must discover the strength and belief she never knew she possessed. If she hopes to save her brother and protect Wildwood's fragile future, she will have to risk everything. From Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning LAIKA, Wildwood is a sweeping adventure about love, sacrifice and the magic that reveals itself when Guru Studio dare to look beyond the familiar. AFI FEST 2026 will take place October 21-25 at the TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood, presenting a curated selection of Red Carpet Premieres, Special Screenings, World Cinema, Documentaries and Short Films. The full festival lineup will be unveiled on September 29. AFI FEST is recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival for the Live Action, Animated and Documentary Short Film categories for the annual Academy Awards. It is also a qualifying festival for consideration for the British Short Film categories of both the BAFTA Film Awards and the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA). Passes to AFI FEST 2026 are now available for purchase online at FEST.AFI.com. Individual tickets will be available for purchase on October 3.

Laika readies 'made by Humans: Creatives in Conversation,' a new video/podcast series | exclusive.

Laika readies 'made by Humans: Creatives in Conversation,' a new video/podcast series | exclusive. The award-winning studio's latest, "Wildwood," arrives later this fall September 8, 2026 @ 2:57 PM Ready to go behind-the-scenes of Portland, Oregon-based animation studio Laika like never before? Laika is readying "Made by Humans: Creatives in Conversation," a new limited video and podcast series determined to explore the human craft behind great storytelling, bringing Laika artists together with filmmakers, performers, designers, puppeteers and digital creators for "for candid conversations about how ideas are shaped, tested, rebuilt and ultimately brought to life," according to the official release. The series is produced by Sony Music Entertainment in association with Wavland Media. See a trailer for the new series below. The series will be available starting tomorrow, Sept. 9, as a video series on YouTube and an audio series on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. New episodes will roll out through September. "Made by Humans: Creatives in Conversation" was recorded inside Laika's Oregon studio, and is intended to go "beyond finished films and polished final products to focus on the creative process itself: the ideas that work, the ones that do not, the problems that demand inventive solutions, and the countless choices and collaborations required to transform imagination into something audiences can see, hear and feel." "At Laika, we believe audiences can feel the human choices behind the work. Every frame carries the craft, judgment and imagination of the artists who made it," David Burke, chief marketing & operations officer at Laika, said in a statement. "'Made by Humans' takes that conversation beyond our studio, bringing together creators from different disciplines to talk honestly about where ideas come from, how they work through the difficult parts and why they keep making. Tools will continue to change, but the human point of view behind them is what gives creative work meaning." Guests for "Made by Humans" include digital illusionist Zach King; Academy Award-winning costume designer Sandy Powell; legendary filmmaker and visual effects artist Phil Tippett; "Wildwood" stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee and Jacob Tremblay; puppeteer and performer James Ortiz (who led the team that brought Rocky to life in "Project Hail Mary"); filmmaker and visual effects veteran Jeff Mann; and animator and creator Kevin Parry, among others. The series launches with two conversations: "How the Art of Animating Actually Works," featuring Brad Schiff and Ortiz, and "How to Actually Make Magic," featuring Brian McLean and King. Additional episodes and guests will be released every other week. As teased in the trailer above, Ortiz and Laika animation head Schiff explore the way performances are brought to life, while Rapid Prototype director McLean and King compare the techniques they use to create their respective illusions. "Wildwood" screenwriter and key Laika collaborator Chris Butler joins Lee and Tremblay "to examine the unusual collaboration between actors, animators, designers and craftspeople required to build a stop-motion performance." Also seen in that trailer are Laika Costume Design Supervisor Deb Cook and Powell, who explore their approaches to costume design (turns out - not that different), while Model Shop Creative Lead Keith McQueen and Tippett "trace the enduring power of physical models and practical filmmaking in a rapidly evolving creative landscape." And of course Tippett is going to have some good George Lucas/"Star Wars" stories! The launch of the podcast/video series coincides with the upcoming release of Laika's "Wildwood," their biggest and most ambitious film to date, which will be released in theaters on Oct. 23. If you weren't already excited for the fantasy epic, then this series should do the trick.

LAIKA and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles launch national "Wildwood Heroes" Campaign celebrating courage beyond the screen.

LAIKA and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles launch national "Wildwood Heroes" Campaign celebrating courage beyond the screen. Sep 03, 2026, 09:10 ET New storytelling campaign brings real-life stories of young people and their mentors to audiences across the country in celebration of LAIKA's upcoming animated feature Wildwood, premiering October 23rd LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Every day, young people across the country face challenges that require extraordinary courage. While the heroine of LAIKA's upcoming animated feature Wildwood journeys into an unknown world to protect someone she loves, many young people navigate their own obstacles with the support of a trusted mentor by their side. Today, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles (BBBSLA) and Academy Award (R)-nominated animation studio LAIKA, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA), announced the launch of Wildwood Heroes, a national storytelling campaign inspired by Wildwood that celebrates real young people whose lives reflect the film's themes of bravery, perseverance, loyalty, and hope. Wildwood, directed by Travis Knight, will be released in theaters nationwide on October 23, 2026. Meet Zoe, the First Wildwood Hero The Wildwood Heroes campaign begins in Los Angeles with Zoe, the first young person to be recognized as a Wildwood Hero, and her Big Sister, Kaeti. Fun, adventurous, and endlessly curious, Zoe has navigated significant changes in her life with remarkable strength. After her family was impacted by the 2025 Southern California wildfires, Zoe faced the challenge of starting over in a new school, meeting new friends, and finding the courage to step into an unfamiliar environment. Through her relationship with Kaeti, Zoe has continued to embrace new experiences with confidence and curiosity while discovering more of her own strength along the way. Their story reflects the heart of Wildwood: courage does not mean never being afraid. Sometimes, courage means taking the next step into the unknown and having someone beside you who believes you can do it. "Zoe's story is a powerful reminder that courage can mean taking the next step when you don't know what comes next. Having someone like Kaeti by her side has helped Zoe embrace new experiences with confidence and curiosity. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, we see every day how a caring mentor can help a young person build confidence, discover their strengths, and see new possibilities for their future. We are so proud to celebrate Zoe and Kaeti as our first Wildwood Heroes and share their story with audiences across the country." - Lauren Plichta, President and CEO Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles A National Celebration of Courage Zoe's story is only the beginning. Over the coming weeks, Wildwood Heroes from Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the country will share their own stories of courage, perseverance, discovery, and the life-changing impact of mentorship. Each story will highlight a unique young person and the mentor who has helped them navigate challenges, embrace new opportunities, and see what is possible for their future. The next Wildwood Heroes will be introduced from communities beyond Los Angeles, bringing the campaign's message of courage and connection to audiences in new parts of the country. "At LAIKA, we know that remarkable things happen when young people have someone who believes in them. Wildwood was brought to life by hundreds of artists, many of whom were encouraged and guided by mentors and advocates along their own paths. That shared belief in the power of mentorship is why we are so proud to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles on the Wildwood Heroes program. Together, we hope to help young people dream boldly, build confidence and discover what they are capable of." - David Burke, Chief Marketing and Operations Officer LAIKA The Power and Impact of Mentorship. Inspired by the beloved illustrated novel by Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis, Wildwood follows a young girl who ventures into a mysterious forest to rescue someone she loves, discovering courage, friendship, and resilience along the way. Through this partnership, those same themes come to life through authentic stories of young people whose lives have been transformed through mentorship. For more than 70 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles has created one-to-one mentoring relationships that help young people realize their full potential. Each year, BBBSLA serves approximately 1,300-1,500 youth across Los Angeles County, connecting them with caring adult mentors who provide guidance, encouragement, and support during some of life's most pivotal moments. The need for mentorship has never been greater. According to the 2025 Youth Mentorship Access Report conducted by The Harris Poll, 84% of young people say mentorship opens doors to new opportunities, while 83% say it helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world success. Long-term research from Harvard University researchers, in partnership with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, found that participants in Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs earned significantly more as adults and experienced measurable gains in economic mobility. Their adult incomes more closely aligned with those of their mentors than with their own families, closing nearly two-thirds of the opportunity gap and helping disrupt cycles of generational poverty. The impact is reflected locally as well. Among BBBSLA participants, 95% graduate from high school, 94% enroll in college, and 92% maintain or reduce symptoms of depression, demonstrating the lasting difference a caring mentor can make in a young person's life. The Wildwood Heroes Campaign The Wildwood Heroes campaign will feature short-form videos, digital storytelling, written profiles, and social media collaborations shared across BBBSLA, LAIKA, BBBSA, and participating Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies, with additional opportunities for national amplification. As each story unfolds, audiences are invited to celebrate the mentors who help young people discover the courage to navigate life's greatest adventures - and to consider becoming that trusted adult for a young person waiting for a mentor! Wildwood: Follow the Crows.

Wildwood: Follow the Crows. August 28, 2026 Wildwood: Follow the Crows is a new public art trail presented by LAIKA, in partnership with OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Wild in Art, the Portland Metro Chamber, Downtown Portland Clean & Safe, and supported by the Visit Downtown Campaign. The trail will be available for people to follow through Friday, October 30. Featuring one-of-a-kind sculptures, hand-painted by local artists, the trail is sponsored by generous donors from the Portland-metro community. All of the sculptures will be auctioned off once the art trail closes in the fall, and the proceeds will support OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital. While most of the sculptures are west of the river, SE is home to one - at OMSI. It's #15 on the art trail map and called "A Murder Huddle" by Allison McClay. McClay is an illustrator, painter and muralist who has beautified SE Portland at multiple locations including Chi Em Restaurant, My Vice Food and Spirits and Ladd's Addition 7-Eleven. Check out one, a few or all of the crows on the trail. Visit ohsufoundation.org/wildwood-follow-the-crows for the map and additional information.
