  • The candidate must work around sectioning saws, grinding and polishing equipment, rotating platens, sharp samples, brittle fragments, polishing media, and ceramic dust.
  • The candidate must handle hazardous chemicals such as acids, solvents, etchants, cleaning agents, mounting materials, or polishing compounds.
  • The candidate may need to work with high-temperature equipment for thermal etching or sample preparation.
  • The candidate may need to wear a respirator and undergo a medical evaluation before fitting.
  • The candidate may need to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • The candidate may need to sit or stand for extended periods while performing microscopy, sample preparation, image analysis, and equipment operation.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare and evaluate ceramic and related material samples in support of R&D, production, quality, and failure analysis activities, following approved work instructions, customer requirements, laboratory procedures, and safety standards.
  • Perform ceramographic sample preparation, including sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, etching, thermal etching, other approved surface preparation methods, and cleaning and handling prepared samples to prevent contamination or surface damage.
  • Prepare ceramic, glass, composite, and other inorganic material samples for optical and scanning electron microscopy evaluation.
  • Operate optical microscopy equipment to capture images, evaluate microstructural features, and support routine material characterization.
  • Support scanning electron microscopy activities, including sample mounting, coating where applicable, basic imaging, image capture, and documentation of observed features.
  • Perform routine grain size measurements using approved procedures, image analysis software, and applicable standards or internal methods.
