Sanford Health is a large nonprofit health system that delivers hospital care, elder and post-acute services, and related health care through a network of hospitals, clinics, and senior care facilities across the Midwest. It operates by integrating multiple care settings into one system, supported by research and global health initiatives. Its model combines acute hospital care, long-term care, and post-acute services under a single organization, with a strong emphasis on philanthropy and mergers to expand reach and capabilities. The company differentiates itself through its breadth of services across the care continuum, extensive rural and regional presence, and a history of strategic mergers that create a full-spectrum care model rather than focusing on a single niche. Sanford Health’s goal is to provide comprehensive, accessible health care to communities, advance pediatric care and medical research, and extend health services through global clinics and partnerships.

Aakhus, MD, and Rudolf, APRN, CNP, join Sanford Bemidji. BEMIDJI, Minn. - Sanford Health is pleased to welcome Angie Aakhus, MD, and Sheryl Rudolf, APRN, CNP, to the dermatology team at the Sanford Bemidji 1611 Anne Street Clinic. Aakhus is a board-certified dermatologist with fellowship training in micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology. She specializes in treating skin cancer using Mohs surgery, which is a precise technique used to treat certain types of skin cancers by removing thin layers of tissue and examining each layer under a microscope until no cancer cells remain. Mohs surgery helps achieve high cure rates of skin cancer while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. She also evaluates and removes certain benign skin growths and cysts. Aakhus, who was born and raised in Bemidji, said she is grateful for the opportunity to provide dermatology care in her hometown. "I view it as a privilege to care for my patients and never take for granted the trust they place in me," Aakhus said. "My approach is centered on listening, clear communication and treating each patient with the same care and attention that I would want for a family member." Aakhus is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society of Mohs Surgery, the American College of Mohs Surgery and the Minnesota Dermatological Society. Rudolf is a nurse practitioner who provides medical and surgical care for patients with conditions affecting the skin, hair and nails. She diagnoses and treats a variety of conditions, including acne, autoimmune diseases, dermatitis, eczema, hair and nail abnormalities, psoriasis, rashes, rosacea and skin cancer. Her services include comprehensive skin examinations, dermatologic procedures, laboratory and diagnostic testing and interpretation, medication prescribing, and skin care education and counseling. Rudolf said she takes a personalized approach to dermatology care, focusing on how skin conditions can affect a person's overall health and quality of life. "My approach to care begins with listening to patients and understanding how their skin condition affects their health, confidence and quality of life," Rudolf said. "I provide thorough evaluations, clear communication and individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient's unique needs and goals." Outside of work, Aakhus enjoys spending time with her husband, Jack, and their three children. The family enjoys living on the lake, spending time outdoors and traveling. Rudolf also enjoys spending time with her husband and three children and exploring northern Minnesota through boating, fishing and other outdoor activities. Aakhus is accepting referrals for Mohs surgery and excisions, and Rudolf is accepting new patients at the Sanford Bemidji 1611 Anne Street Clinic. Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story. More stories for you. Conversation
Sanford Health: chief transformation officer to join Newsweek AI Health Summit. Tommy Ibrahim to share enterprise AI strategy during panel discussion with national healthcare leaders SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Tommy Ibrahim, M.D., MBA, MHA, executive vice president and chief transformation officer at Sanford Health, will join national healthcare and research leaders at the Newsweek AI Health Summit Sept. 23 in New York City. As health systems move beyond individual AI pilots, the summit will bring together leaders focused on the future of care and the responsible adoption of emerging technology. Ibrahim will bring Sanford's perspective as the nation's largest rural health system, with an integrated care and coverage model spanning rural, urban and suburban communities. "AI is an enabler, not the goal. At Sanford, we start with the problem we are trying to solve and the value we want to create," said Ibrahim. "We are putting practical AI tools into the hands of employees, redesigning workflows alongside frontline teams and scaling solutions that create capacity, reduce burden, expand access and improve outcomes. The most important question is not what AI can do - it is whether it makes care meaningfully better for patients and the people who care for them." Sanford has saved more than 100,000 hours from the development of machine-learning models and automation workflows. The health system is also using AI to identify chronic kidney disease and colorectal cancer risk earlier, strengthen patient safety through virtual nursing and give clinicians more time with patients through ambient documentation. Ibrahim will join a panel discussion, "Hospitals Reimagined," moderated by Alexis Kayser, healthcare editor at Newsweek. Other panelists include Dr. Brendan Carr, CEO of Mount Sinai Health System; John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital; and Dr. Björn Zoéga, CEO of King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, a healthcare institution in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The panel will explore how the role of the hospital is changing as more care moves into ambulatory, virtual and home settings; where AI is delivering measurable results today; how health systems are redesigning workflows and preparing their people; and what it takes to move promising tools from pilots to responsible enterprise scale. A board-certified hospitalist, Ibrahim received his Doctor of Medicine degree from St. Christopher's IMD College of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, an academic affiliate of Johns Hopkins and is licensed in multiple states. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Columbia University and, a Master of Healthcare Administration degree from Seton Hall University. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a Fellow in Hospital Medicine.
