Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with an Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Have three years of experience in an acute hospital setting.
  • Hold a current Vermont registered nurse license.
  • Maintain current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certifications.
Responsibilities
  • Actively participate in the planning of departmental and hospital-wide program development.
  • Assist staff in developing communication skills.
  • Assist in identifying departmental education needs and participate in education offerings.
  • Assume direct responsibility for supervising all hospital personnel on the assigned shift.
  • Assume authorization to remove medications from designated areas and access the Pyxis system to refill pockets as needed when the pharmacy is closed.
  • Participate in self-evaluation and mutual evaluation with the Senior Director of Patient Care Services.
  • Maintain Critical Access Hospital designation.
  • Ensure that staff use computerization functions appropriately and accurately.
  • Collaborate with the education department to meet staff educational needs.
  • Communicate and demonstrate support for departments’ annual plans and goals.
  • Communicate and support the organization’s mission, vision, and goals.
  • Demonstrate a collaborative leadership style and act as a role model.
  • Demonstrate awareness of department-specific performance improvement activities and initiatives identified by department heads.
  • Demonstrate awareness of hospital-wide performance improvement activities and initiatives identified by leadership.
  • Communicate and work collaboratively with physicians.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the registered nurse union contract and support the nurse manager by implementing it.
  • Develop active and collaborative relationships with all departments.
  • Document attendance at educational offerings.
  • Facilitate unit and department program efforts by ensuring effective implementation through collaboration with staff and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Identify program and systems problems, seek resolutions, and communicate changes to the appropriate leader.
  • Incorporate current issues in nursing and health care into the professional practice environment.
  • Initiate staff development activities through mentoring and coaching.
  • Initiate, direct, and facilitate delivery of high-quality, age-appropriate care in a cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain effective, diplomatic, and accurate communication.
  • Make decisions regarding staff and resource allocation in support of patient needs and program budgets.
  • Participate in hospital-wide and department-level committees.
  • Participate in professional meetings and educational conferences to maintain and enhance professional competence.
  • Serve as a liaison between units, administration, and the community; interact professionally with departments, physicians, patients, community members, and news media; and assist patients, families, and staff during crises.
  • Support orientation of new employees.
  • Use critical thinking during unusual situations and implement actions that best meet patient and staff needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing is preferred.
  • Previous leadership experience is desired.
