Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) designs, builds, and maintains advanced ships and defense technologies for national security. It operates through three divisions: Ingalls Shipbuilding and Newport News Shipbuilding, which construct ships such as aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, destroyers, and other naval assets for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, and Mission Technologies, which develops cybersecurity, unmanned systems, and C5ISR solutions using artificial intelligence and machine learning to support military operations. The company combines traditional naval shipbuilding with advanced tech like space operations, electronic warfare, and autonomous systems across land, sea, and air. This makes HII different from competitors by integrating end-to-end ship construction with high-tech defense solutions under one umbrella. Its goal is to help maintain global security and national defense by delivering reliable ships and integrated defense technologies to customers.

What believers are saying

  • August 2026 contract modifications added roughly $76.6 billion across Virginia and Columbia submarines.
  • HII expects 2026 to outsource 2.5 million shipbuilding hours, boosting capacity quickly.
  • Colonna's and HD HHI agreements expand distributed manufacturing, reducing yard congestion through 2030.

What critics are saying

  • Q2 2026 free cash flow was negative $153 million, pressuring funding for expansion.
  • Virginia and Columbia submarine execution governs HII's reputation; any slip invites Hanwha Philly Shipyard.
  • HYPR payouts require milestone success; failed robotics integration wastes time and preserves labor bottlenecks.

What makes Huntington Ingalls Industries unique

  • HII alone builds Newport News nuclear carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy.
  • August 2026 HYPR contracts make HII the shipbuilder industrializing physical AI at scale.
  • AUKUS supplier qualification and Charleston Operations give HII a rare allied submarine foothold.

HII signs up to $900M agreement with Path Robotics, GrayMatter Robotics.

HII signs up to $900M agreement with Path Robotics, GrayMatter Robotics. Rove pairs Path Robotics' Obsidian physical AI model with legged robot for autonomous welding beyond fixed cells. Source: Path Robotics Huntington Ingalls Industries, or HII, today announced long-term performance-based production agreements with GrayMatter Robotics and Path Robotics. Under the agreements, HII intends to award up to $900 million in total shipbuilding work to Path Robotics and GrayMatter across seven years. Path Robotics provides robotic welding technology, while GrayMatter offers robotic sanding systems. "We are committed to making generational investments to develop new shipbuilding capability and to expand capacity," said Eric Chewning, executive vice president of maritime systems and corporate strategy at HII. "Together, we are defining a new approach to robotics in shipbuilding: automation that can adapt to extreme levels of complexity, mix, and size." GrayMatter, Path Robotics participate in HYPR program. Both companies are part of the High-Yield Production Robotics, or HYPR, program. Huntington Ingalls launched this program in April. Its goal is to accelerate advanced, adaptive automation in the fabrication process of both crewed and uncrewed naval platforms. The performance-based production agreements are also part of the HYPR Program. The program includes collaboration and joint development frameworks that establish governance, program execution, and long-term operational alignment among the companies. The funding is contingent on the two companies meeting clearly defined technology and manufacturing readiness, as well as performance milestones, said HII. Agreement targets a range of U.S. Navy programs. With the agreement, Huntington Ingalls said it plans to accelerate development and deployment of physical AI across U.S. Navy shipbuilding programs, including aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers, amphibious ships, future frigates and unmanned surface vessels. "For years, we've believed physical AI could fundamentally change manufacturing," said Andy Lonsberry, co-founder and CEO of Path Robotics. "HYPR is a powerful validation of our vision - that physical AI can scale shipbuilding capacity in one of the world's most demanding production environments." The agreements include two stages: a Navy-grade development stage and a delivery stage. In the development stage, both companies will partner with HII to develop, validate and qualify high-precision production techniques. These can be applied across autonomous welding, grinding, blasting, painting, assembly, inspection and other fabrication processes. The companies will then integrate the techniques into an autonomous production line. For instance, Rove pairs Path Robotics' Obsidian physical AI model with a quadruped robot to bring autonomous welding beyond fixed cells. It deploys directly onto large assemblies and immovable structures across shipbuilding, heavy industry, and construction. HII outsources shipbuilding work to automation partners. Huntington Ingalls said the agreements establish a testing, qualification, and oversight process to ensure that every technology meets the standards of U.S. Navy shipbuilding. In the delivery stage, HII will begin sourcing shipbuilding work from both companies through the new line, contingent upon favorable cost, schedule, and quality performance. It said it designed this stage to augment its current distributed shipbuilding strategy, starting with small steel structures and growing to include units and modules. In 2026, HII plans to outsource more than 2.5 million hours of shipbuilding work, a 30% increase from 2025, while expanding its structural assembly network of assembly partner companies, enabling more work to be completed outside the shipyards before final assembly.

Colonna's signs component deal with Newport News Shipbuilding. Professional Mariner Staff August 5, 2026 (NORFOLK, Va.) - Colonna's Shipyard Inc. (CSI) has announced a multi-year agreement with Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division for structural component fabrication for U.S. Navy nuclear shipbuilding programs. According to Randall Crutchfield, chairman and CEO at Colonna's, the distributed shipbuilding partnership will help NNS meet the generational demand for Navy assets and provide Colanna's with predictable workload. "This agreement better enables CSI to commit resources to expand our facility, continue training and retaining a skilled workforce, and expedite critical components needed for top-line Navy programs," Crutchfield said. The agreement has the potential to extend through 2030. Financial terms were not disclosed. "CSI is pleased to enter into this partnership by leveraging our facilities and skilled workforce at Accurity Industrial Contractors in Owensboro, Ky., alongside our Steel America operations in Norfolk. Steel America has delivered components supporting multiple U.S. Navy programs, including CVN 78 and CVN 80, and is well positioned to continue support of critical shipbuilding efforts and help meet the nation's growing defense requirements," Crutchfield added. "This agreement reflects the continued growth of our relationship and the shared commitment by both companies to strengthen support for the U.S. Navy," said Matt Mulherin, NNS vice president of supply chain and strategic sourcing. "CSI is committed to quality standards that accompany this level of work. Our team of dedicated and skilled employees has proven the vital role small, family-owned businesses play in meeting and exceeding schedule requirements that production at scale necessitates for our national defense," added Crutchfield. - Colanna's Shipyard Inc.

HII beats Q2 revenue expectations with $3.42B, EPS up 38% on shipbuilding gains

Huntington Ingalls reported second-quarter results that beat Wall Street expectations, with revenue up 10.9% year-on-year to $3.42 billion and non-GAAP earnings of $5.27 per share, 38% above analyst estimates. CEO Christopher Kastner attributed the performance to increased shipbuilding throughput and strong contract awards. The company achieved a 12% year-to-date improvement in shipbuilding throughput and aims for 15% by year-end, supported by hiring over 3,500 new shipbuilders. Huntington Ingalls secured $6.7 billion in new contracts during the quarter, including submarine deals and the Navy's Lionfish unmanned undersea vehicle programme. The company is expanding its distributed shipbuilding strategy and advancing autonomous maritime technologies. Looking ahead, management expects shipbuilding revenue between $10.2 billion and $10.4 billion, with margins of 6% to 6.5%. The company plans to deliver five ships over the next year.
