Requirements
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant through the American Association of Medical Assistants, American Medical Technologists, National Healthcareer Association, or National Center for Competency Testing is required.
  • National Healthcareer Association candidates must have completed a one- to two-year diploma or degree program or have two years of prior clinical experience.
  • A Medical Assistant certification or Licensed Practical Nurse license is required.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required.
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database applications, are required.
  • Knowledge and experience documenting patient care in an electronic health record are required.
  • Phlebotomy experience with patients of all ages is required.
  • The position requires regular on-site attendance and flexibility for occasional weekend, holiday, evening, or special-assignment coverage.
  • The position requires the ability to lift and carry 25 to 35 pounds and push or pull 50 to 100 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Participate in daily huddles with patient care teams.
  • Prepare patient charts for providers.
  • Review patient registries and identify preventive care due for patients.
  • Assist in preventive care outreach initiatives.
  • Obtain vital signs.
  • Assist in obtaining medical records.
  • Perform indicated screening procedures.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and assist providers during examinations.
  • Prepare sterile fields.
  • Perform phlebotomy and process specimens.
  • Prepare and administer medications and vaccines, including intramuscular and intradermal injections, as directed by the provider.
  • Serve as a preceptor for new staff.
  • Provide occasional coverage support for other ambulatory offices.
  • Assist with administrative duties as needed, including handling calls.
  • Participate in process improvement for new and existing workflows.
  • Support divisional and organizational quality initiatives.
  • Support pop-up vaccine and testing community events.
Desired Qualifications
  • One to two years of medical assisting experience in a primary care ambulatory setting is preferred.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse licensure is preferred.
  • Spanish-speaking skills are preferred.

MAHEC provides patient care, education, and research in Western North Carolina. It serves as a branch campus for UNC schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and public health, hosting the UNC Health Sciences at MAHEC and the UNC Gillings MPH program. It operates multiple clinics including Family Health, Ob/Gyn, Dental Health, and Community Pharmacies, and runs the region’s only high-risk obstetrics practice as a Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike. Its mission is to grow and improve the regional health workforce and health outcomes through hands-on clinical care, education from high school to graduate programs, and collaborative research.
