New questions for Manchester City auditors BDO. Updated: 03:22 EDT, 3 October 2026 Accountancy firm BDO is facing fresh questions about its audit of Manchester City as the shamed Premier League club lodged an appeal after being found guilty of the biggest cheating scandal in British sporting history. The Daily Mail this week revealed that regulators were 'looking into' BDO - which signed off City's accounts over the nine years the football club was found to have broken financial rules to the tune of £900 million between the 2009-10 and 2017- 18 seasons. Now it can be revealed that during this period BDO, the fifth-biggest accountancy firm in the UK, was paid what appears to be a very low fee for the annual audit of City's numbers. Payments to BDO peaked at £47,000 in 2016 before falling to £42,000 two years later, an analysis of City's accounts shows. That compares with a £500,000 fee rivals Manchester United charged its auditors in 2018. 'On the face of it £47,000 doesn't look particularly high,' said football finance expert Kieran Maguire. 'A (BDO) partner would be charging £250 to £300 an hour and you've got staff so you're not getting many hours of work for a £500 million business.' The recently concluded three year Premier League inquiry into City found its Abu Dhabi owners and commercial partners were at the centre of a series of 'sham' sponsorship deals that boosted the club's income and reduced costs by more than £900 million, breaching financial fair play rules. City's accounts show in the period covering the Premier League's inquiry 'other operating income' grew rapidly to account for £232 million of total revenue by 2018, easily outstripping broadcast and gate receipts. 'If I was a partner and was looking at risk areas then perhaps this might be on my "high risk" pile,' Maguire said. Pressure is growing on the Financial Reporting Council (FRC), the audit watchdog, to explain how it will examine potential audit failings. Liam Byrne, chairman of the Commons business and trade select committee, last night wrote to the FRC's chair Jayne-Anne Gadhia asking for her assessment. He said the findings raised a question over how 'the established system of audit and regulatory scrutiny [could] fail to uncover alleged misstatements of such a scale over nine years'. Byrne added: 'The FRC must establish where scrutiny broke down, and what must change.' City yesterday said the Premier League's ruling on its cheating contained 'clear material errors and is unsafe'. 'The club is innocent of the accusations made and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists relating to this case,' it added. The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales declined to comment. BDO also declined to comment.
BDO appoints new London tax partner. Accountancy and business advisory firm BDO has further strengthened its partnership with the appointment of a new tax partner. Tommy Nguyen joins BDO in London as a tax partner where he will play a key role in expanding the wider private business tax offering to mid-market clients. Tommy has almost 20 years' experience in the profession, with expertise in advising hospitality and leisure sector businesses on capital allowance services. Tommy joins from PwC's Private Business Tax team and will be based in BDO's Baker Street headquarters. Louise Sayers, head of people, culture & purpose at BDO says: "Tommy's appointment will undoubtedly strengthen our partnership and the business tax services we are able to offer our clients. BDO welcomes 25 Southampton trainees. Accountancy and business advisory firm BDO has welcomed 25 trainees to its Southampton office as part of an intake of more than 500 people across the UK. The Central South recruits include university graduates, school-leaver apprentices and students undertaking 12-month industrial placements across BDO's audit, tax, deals and consulting, risk and outsourcing teams. Their arrival takes the number of trainees joining the firm in Central South since 2024 to 79. Across the UK, BDO has welcomed 525 trainees this year, with 55 per cent based outside London as part of its continued investment in regional growth. More than one in four of BDO's 8500 employees is now undertaking a graduate or school-leaver apprenticeship or industrial placement. Max Whitlock, an audit trainee at BDO in the South of England, joined the firm's school-leaver apprenticeship programme in 2023 and is due to qualify in 2027. Max said: "There needs to be more exposure to apprenticeship information and job opportunities for students. "There's still a perception that if students want to pursue a professional career they must go to university. "I now know that's not true and have seen an increasing trend across industries that show school leavers progressing in their careers. "I chose an apprenticeship because I knew I wanted to go into accounting, and I was ready to start work. "It ticked all the boxes for where I wanted to go with my career and enables me to gain a qualification while I am receiving a salary." The latest recruits will begin with a two-day induction covering areas including innovation, technology and data, quality and risk and personal development. BDO has also expanded its early careers outreach this year, engaging more than 8200 young people through events, social mobility initiatives and virtual work experience. Steve Le Bas, regional managing partner at BDO in the Central South, added: "The impact of investing in early career opportunities cannot be overstated and BDO is committed to supporting young people across the Central South to reach their potential. "We know the ripple effect these pathways have. "They have the power to not only break down generational barriers, but to improve social mobility and make the accountancy sector, and society more generally, more inclusive and equitable for all. "It's such a rewarding experience to welcome our annual cohort of trainees to BDO in Southampton. "Each year they bring a wealth of fresh perspectives, energy and curiosity to the business. "With the skills shortages and labour market conditions businesses are facing today, it's never been more important to offer meaningful career opportunities to help develop the leaders of the future."
