About Our Program
The Comptroller of the Treasury's Audit Internship Program is a 10-week paid educational and experiential learning opportunity offering undergraduate students a chance to witness and participate in the audit operations of the office. Interns will spend the summer building skills through their assignment to an active audit and audit-specific training, Interns will also have opportunities to build relationships with each other through shared experiences.

Information Systems (IS) Audit Intern responsibilities may include learning to examine and review the following: the adequacy of internal controls; records; reports; information systems; compliance with laws and regulations; and management practices for state government entities and other organizations receiving public funds. IS Audit Interns may assist in evaluating:

The adequacy of internal controls,
Data integrity for application systems,
Compliance with laws, regulations, contracts, and grant agreements, and/or
The efficiency and effectiveness of an entity’s operations.

Our summer internship program is designed to be both professionally and academically beneficial. Interns gain hands‑on experience while participating in meaningful professional development activities such as Business Etiquette Day, a full‑day session focused on professionalism, emotional intelligence, and understanding one’s professional brand, complete with an etiquette lunch led by staff. Interns also enjoy engaging activities like speed networking with full‑time employees, a guided tour of the Tennessee Capitol to explore the state’s history, and weekly cohort check‑ins to foster connection and collaboration. The cohort experience culminates in a final presentation showcasing what interns have learned and contributed during their time with the Office.

Location
Information Systems audit internship opportunities are based out of Nashville, TN. Depending on the audit assignment, interns may have the opportunity for limited travel during the summer. Typical travel opportunities are in the Nashville area; however, some may allow for travel to other parts of Tennessee.

Who We're Looking For
We are looking for rising juniors, seniors, or graduate accounting and information systems students who are interested in applying what they've learned in the classroom to governmental auditing. To be considered for the internship program, candidates should have successfully completed at least 6 hours of accounting, computer information systems, computer science, information security, data analytics, or business-related coursework.

Successful interns are those who are adaptable, able to think critically, work well both individually and as part of a team, and are willing to learn and grow. Candidates should exhibit strong interpersonal, verbal communication, organizational, and writing skills. Interns are expected to apply their classroom knowledge to meaningful audit work.

The Office of the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury is responsible for the audit of state and local governmental entities and participates in the general financial and administrative management and oversight of state government.  In the Comptroller’s Office, we strive to deliver on our mission to make government work better.  Through dedicated hard work and commitment, every Comptroller’s Office employee accepts personal responsibility to accomplish our mission and uphold it.

Compensation
Interns are paid $24 per hour via a third-party company. Audit-related travel will be reimbursed.

Kyoto Fusioneering to build fusion fuel breeding device at Oak Ridge lab

Kyoto Fusioneering, a Japan-based fusion power supply chain company, has secured grants from the US Department of Energy and Tennessee to build a prototype fuel breeding device at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The company, which has raised $121 million in committed capital, is relocating its US headquarters to Oak Ridge. The device, called Unity-3, will test breeding blanket technology that harvests energy from fusion reactors whilst generating fresh fuel. Over half of fusion startups plan to work with external suppliers like Kyoto Fusioneering on fuel cycle technologies, according to a recent Fusion Industry Association survey. Unity-3 will test various breeding blanket materials, including liquid lithium, helping researchers validate computer models. Several fusion startups will use data from Unity-3 experiments to design their reactors.

Thu, July 16, 2026 at 9:28 AM Updated Thu, July 16, 2026 at 10:06 AM Metro Nashville has filed a lawsuit against the State of Tennessee, alleging the Tennessee Department of Correction failed to transfer convicted felons. (WZTV) NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) - Metro Nashville has filed a lawsuit against the State of Tennessee, alleging the Tennessee Department of Correction has failed to transfer convicted felons from the Davidson County Jail within the timeframe required by state law, contributing to overcrowding and increasing costs for local taxpayers. The 55-page petition, filed July 9 in Davidson County Chancery Court, asks a judge to order TDOC to take custody of inmates Metro says should already be housed in state prisons. According to the lawsuit, Tennessee law requires the department to accept custody of certain state-convicted felons within 14 days after receiving the required sentencing documents. Metro alleges that requirement has not been met. The petition claims 151 inmates who should be in state custody remain housed at the Davidson County Jail, with an average overstay of 153 days beyond the statutory deadline. Metro argues those delays have contributed to jail overcrowding, safety concerns for both inmates and correctional staff, and increased costs that it says are ultimately borne by Davidson County taxpayers. The lawsuit also states the county spends significantly more to house inmates than it receives in reimbursement from the state, resulting in millions of dollars in additional costs over several years. Metro is asking the court to issue a writ of mandamus, a legal order requiring a government agency to perform a duty required by law. In this case, Metro is seeking an order requiring TDOC to take custody of eligible inmates within the timeline outlined in state law. The petition also references previous statements from TDOC that the department cannot accept additional inmates if doing so would exceed available bed capacity or compromise the safety of inmates and staff inside state prisons. In a statement provided to FOX 17 News, Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall said the department should be housing state-convicted felons in state-funded prisons. "The Tennessee Department of Correction should meet its obligation of housing state-convicted felons in state-funded prisons. Failing to do so creates serious liability issues for our county and life safety challenges for both staff and inmates within our local jails," Hall said. When contacted by FOX 17 News, the Tennessee Department of Correction declined to comment, citing pending litigation. Metro is not seeking monetary damages in the lawsuit. Instead, the city is asking the court to order TDOC to transfer the inmates identified in the petition and comply with the transfer timeline established under Tennessee law moving forward. By Admin / June 8, 2026 FAIRVIEW, TN - Remember last August, when Williamson County RINOS brought you the heartwarming story of Commissioner Don Bufalini parking his patriotic Gator directly on top of the handicap access zone at the Fairview Walmart - on a Sunday, in broad daylight, without a placard, without a care, and apparently without ever having seen a blue wheelchair sign before? Good times. Well. It gets better. Previously, on the Williamson RINOs... August 2025: "Fairview Commissioner Mistakes Handicapped Access Lane for VIP Parking for Patriotic Gator" - photos, facts, and the debut of its finest category ever: GATORs (Government Actors Totally Oblivious to Regulations). Still up. Still accurate. Williamson County RINOS said then that Don Bufalini operates by a "Rules for Thee but Not for Me" philosophy. Williamson County RINOS said he was positioning himself, not serving. Williamson County RINOS said public service starts with following the law - not just filming your coffee cart evangelism for five Facebook groups. Ten months later, Fairview's own city planner said it to his face. In a public meeting. On video. In front of the entire board. The farewell address nobody saw coming (except Williamson County RINOS). At the May 21st Board of Commissioners meeting, city planner Ethan Greer announced his resignation to take a position with the State of Tennessee - which, Williamson County RINOS note, presumably has fewer commissioners who park golf carts in handicap spaces and pressure employees to defy their supervisors. Greer went around the room like a gentleman. He thanked Mayor Lisa Anderson for going above and beyond. He praised Commissioner Hall for his passion and historical knowledge of Fairview. He commended Commissioner Roberts for actually listening to constituents and asking the right questions. He was gracious, professional, and thorough. Then he turned to Don Bufalini. And said this. Out loud. On the record. With the cameras rolling. "Commissioner Bufalini, I hope that you see my departure from the city as a time of reflection for how you conduct yourself as a city commissioner. You've made staff look incompetent by over-committing the city to citizens without seeking correct information first. You've asked employees to go against direct orders of their supervisors, and time and time again you refuse to listen to city staff about disseminating public information. The lack of care that you have for my city is who you are - it's not who we are." The board then gave Ethan Greer a round of applause. Not polite golf claps. Not awkward-silence-followed-by-one-person-clapping. A round of applause - from the people who sit next to Don Bufalini at every meeting - for a man who just used his farewell speech to deliver what can only be described as a professional intervention at the public podium. The support network, unshaken. Now, you might think that having your city's own planner publicly describe you as someone who makes staff look incompetent, pressures employees to break the chain of command, and fundamentally does not care about the city he serves might give a man pause. Might prompt some reflection. Might inspire at least a brief consultation with someone from his long list of advisors - Brian Clifford, Andy Marshall, Jack Johnson, Lee Reeves, Jake McCalmon, or Marsha Blackburn, all of whom remain firmly in the Bufalini corner. Reader, it will not. Because this is the guy they chose. This is the hill the establishment has decided to die on. A man whose own city applauded the person who called him out on the way out the door. In conclusion. Last August Williamson County RINOS introduced the GATOR: Government Actor Totally Oblivious to Regulations. Williamson County RINOS stand by the classification. Williamson County RINOS'd only add a new subcategory for May 2026: a GATOR who is also, per the sworn professional testimony of his own city planner, Totally Oblivious to Staff, Chain of Command, and Basic Civic Responsibility. New vintage look 'Welcome to Tennessee' signs coming to interstates. Nashville Tennessean June 1, 2026, 2:42 p.m. CT For the first time in nearly three decades, drivers entering Tennessee will be greeted by new signs. The Tennessee Departments of Transportation and Tourist Development unveiled a new sign design at a first installation on Interstate 26 in Unicoi County on June 1, the 230th anniversary of Tennessee's founding. The new sign reads "Welcome to Tennessee, the volunteer state" in a vintage-style lettering. From left to right, images of the Hernando deSoto bridge in Memphis, the State Capitol, and a mountain scene represent the state's three grand divisions. The signs were designed by Nashville-based firm Lose Design.
