Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent General Educational Development credential is required.
  • Completion of a formal Dental Assistant program at a college, technical institute, or equivalent is required.
  • At least 6 months of work experience is required; employees without formal training must have at least 18 months of Dental Assistant experience.
  • The employee must be registered with the Washington State Department of Health and maintain current Washington State dental registration.
  • Basic Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • Annual tuberculosis testing, pre-hire and annual employee health screening, and the required influenza vaccination are conditions of employment.
  • The employee must communicate, read, and write in English and read and interpret common written dentistry materials.
  • The employee must communicate effectively with patients and staff verbally and in writing.
  • The employee must be able to perform basic mathematical calculations involving discounts, proportions, and percentages.
  • The employee must be able to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • The employee must follow infection-control practices to prevent exposure to communicable diseases.
  • The employee must pass the Dental Assistant II competency test and practical examination with a score of at least 80 percent when advancement or hiring requires it.
  • The employee must sign a permanent confidentiality oath covering patient-related information and complete a Washington State Patrol background check.
  • The employee must be able to sit, stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear, occasionally stoop, kneel, or crouch, and lift or move up to 50 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Provide chairside assistance to dental providers using four-handed dentistry for diagnostic, preventive, restorative, endodontic, periodontal, oral surgery, prosthodontic, orthodontic, and other services permitted by the Washington Dental Practice Act.
  • Identify and categorize age-specific patient needs, including infant, adolescent, and geriatric needs.
  • Escort patients to and from treatment rooms, greet and seat them, and maintain courteous and professional communication, including confidentiality.
  • Communicate provider and patient-flow delays to front-desk staff and patients.
  • Provide patient education and instructions before, during, and after dental procedures.
  • Schedule appointments and register arriving patients in Dentrix and Allscripts Practice Management.
  • Complete accurate charting in Dentrix using the Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan or Patient Assessment, Review, Treatment, and Services formats.
  • Obtain accurate blood-pressure readings and other vital signs as directed by the dental provider.
  • Maintain sterilization procedures and Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements in treatment and sterilization areas.
  • Assist with inventory and ordering dental supplies.
  • Perform duties in the Dental Department task and duty list and assignments from supervisors or regional dental management.
  • Participate in Dental Department and Sea Mar quality-improvement activities.
  • Provide treatment plans and cost estimates, sequence treatments, complete insurance pre-authorizations, and verify patient eligibility and benefits as directed.
  • Maintain records for Material Safety Data Sheets, spore tests, inventory and supply orders, equipment maintenance, inventory lists, nitrous oxide and oxygen cylinders, and emergency-kit logs at standalone dental sites.
  • Assist with coordinating training for new employees and dental trainees.
  • Perform assigned clinical or administrative duties approved by dental or clinic management.
  • Perform temporary work in other departments or dental sites when assigned.
  • Travel to other work sites when required.
