Requirements
  • Willingness to develop an understanding of and support for The Salvation Army's mission and purpose in Canada as they relate to the position.
  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Complete a formal post-secondary or college program of two academic years; an alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Complete children leadership training and/or Biblical studies.
  • Have at least one year of related experience, including experience working with children and youth.
  • Hold a valid driver's license and have a clean driver's abstract.
  • Have some theological or ministry-related training and education related to the position.
  • Demonstrate a mature personal Christian commitment and the ability to lead and teach from the Bible and Salvation Army doctrines.
  • Have a good understanding of family system dynamics.
  • Have interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.
  • Be able to work independently, creatively, and proactively in strategic planning and implementation.
  • Have administrative, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Have supervisory, delegation, and development skills.
  • Be willing to undergo an enhanced criminal record check and obtain internal Salvation Army child abuse registry clearance.
  • Be able to work in an environment requiring confidentiality and adaptability to change.
  • Be willing to work a flexible schedule based on programming needs.
  • Be able to perform moderate computer work, occasionally lift and move equipment, load and unload trucks for emergency disaster response, and perform walkabouts.
  • Be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Have attentive listening skills, including empathy toward guests, volunteers, and coworkers, and the ability to give directions.
  • Be able to monitor the environment and security cameras and remain attentive when interacting with guests.
  • Have good computer and organizational skills.
  • Be willing and able to complete training required by contract or The Salvation Army.
  • Be willing and able to complete WHMIS and Universal Precautions training during the probation period.
  • Be willing and able to complete online new-hire health and safety training during the probation period.
  • Successfully complete applicable screening and background checks satisfactory to The Salvation Army, including its Abuse Registry.
  • Work evenings and weekends as needed, with schedule flexibility based on programming.
  • Be willing to travel within or outside the city as required.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee and coordinate children’s discipleship by preparing curriculum, involving volunteers, and providing resources for activities as required.
  • Plan and conduct community outreach activities for children and youth.
  • Identify ways to connect children served through the food bank with church programs.
  • Incorporate appropriate Christian practices into programs and provide age-appropriate opportunities for spiritual and cultural exploration and discussion.
  • Support and pray with children, youth, and their parents or guardians as needed; pray regularly for children.
  • Recruit, screen, orient, and train volunteer leaders.
  • Track and report statistics for children’s and youth activities in SAMIS.
  • Provide holistic physical, emotional, and spiritual care to the Gitxsan Lax Yip community through integrated ministry programs and outreach for children, youth, and their families.

  • Fluency in spoken and written Gitxsan is an asset.
