What believers are saying

  • Growth is steady: July 2026 results showed second-quarter revenue up 13% to $12.6 billion, with a 33.4% operating margin.
  • Advertising is scaling fast: in July 2026, Netflix forecast ad revenue roughly doubling to about $3 billion this year.
  • Pay aims high: Netflix's culture memo says it pays each person's personal top of market for role and location.

What critics are saying

  • Cuts are on the table: Puck reported in October 2026 that Netflix is weighing layoffs of about 5% of staff.
  • The performance bar is unforgiving: managers apply a keeper test, asking whether they would fight to keep each employee.
  • YouTube draws more TV viewing: figures reported in October 2026 put it at 14.2% of TV time, Netflix at 7.8%.

What makes Netflix unique

  • Scale is its moat: Netflix passed 325 million paid memberships by the end of 2025, serving nearly a billion viewers.
  • Non-English shows carry real weight: they drew over a third of Netflix viewing in the first half of 2026.
  • It owns its ad technology: the in-house Netflix Ads Suite has run in all 12 ad-tier countries since mid-2025.

Netflix loses cultural buzz as viewing share falls to 7.8% and shares drop 26%

Netflix has lost the thing that set it apart from other streamers: a show or film that captures the cultural moment. Its share of US TV viewing fell to 7.8% in July from 8.8% a year earlier, according to Nielsen, while Prime Video, Peacock and Paramount+ gained. Last week the company said it would cut 6% of its staff and replace chief content officer Bela Bajaria with Peter Rice, a Walt Disney Co. and 21st Century Fox veteran. Film chief Dan Lin is also leaving. Rice takes over on October 26. Netflix shares are down about 26% this year. On Tuesday, the company is expected to report its weakest revenue growth in three years. Rivals make fewer, more targeted titles, while Netflix added some 440 in 2025 alone.

Jefferies starts Netflix at Buy with $85 target, seeing 20% upside

Jefferies has started coverage of Netflix with a "Buy" rating and an $85 price target. The stock trades at about $71, which implies upside of more than 20%. Analyst John Colantuoni cites better monetisation, margin gains from scale, and share buybacks. Jefferies expects earnings per share to grow more than 14% a year over the next decade. It projects advertising revenue growth of 35% a year and price rises of about 7% a year. Netflix repurchased $4.7 billion of shares in its second quarter, its largest quarter ever, with about $27 billion of buyback capacity left. Management expects 13% to 14% revenue growth this year. Wall Street forecasts sales of $51.22 billion in 2026.

Netflix cuts 1,000 jobs, replaces content chief and seeks a new "Squid Game" as shares fall 22%

Netflix is under pressure to restart growth as it cuts about 1,000 jobs, roughly 6% of its workforce, mainly across product, technology, legal and human resources. Its stock is down more than 22% in 2026. The company is replacing content chief Bela Bajaria with Peter Rice, a former Walt Disney Co. television chairman, who starts October 26. YouTube took 14.2% of US TV viewing in July, against less than 8% for Netflix. LightShed Partners co-founder Rich Greenfield told CNBC that Netflix needs a breakout hit in areas such as animation or scripted shows. He said about two years have passed without one, and he sees Netflix's push into video podcasts and YouTube creators as a possible growth driver, with many deals yet to launch.

Netflix has risen in 17 of 24 fourth quarters, but slowing growth clouds this year's outlook

Netflix shares have risen in the fourth quarter in 17 of the last 24 years, with a median gain of about 12%. Last year's quarter was a loss of about 22%, from near $120 to under $94. The stock trades at roughly $72, up about 4% since September but 42% below its 52-week high of $124.86. Netflix reports third-quarter results on October 20. The October report appears to matter more than the calendar. Since 2004, Netflix has made 14 one-day moves of 10% or more after that report, and in 13 of those years the quarter ended in the same direction. Revenue growth has slowed from 18% in late 2025 to 13% in April to June. Management forecasts 12% for the third quarter, so the fourth-quarter outlook may sway the stock.

Netflix fires Chief Content Officer amid mass layoffs, woke platform's movie head could be next.

Netflix fires Chief Content Officer amid mass layoffs, woke platform's movie head could be next. Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria is out after 10 years, and the company is replacing her as it cuts about 1,000 jobs. Former Disney and Fox executive Peter Rice will take the role, Variety reported Thursday. As chief content officer, Rice will lead Netflix's global content organization, covering scripted and unscripted series, films, live events, and more. DiscussingFilm said Bajaria was fired and that Netflix's film chief Dan Lin is also expected to leave, subject to a final decision by Rice. Bajaria's departure comes in the same week Netflix laid off roughly 1,000 employees, or 6 percent of its workforce, the largest cut the streamer has made since 2022. The Western Journal reported Wednesday that the reductions hit tech, legal, product, and human resources, according to a memo from co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos. Netflix film vice president Doug Belgrad and film director Sheroum Kim were also let go in the restructuring, Variety said.
