The Federal Reserve System

View

The Federal Reserve System is the central bank of the United States that conducts national monetary policy, supervises and regulates banks and bank holding companies, and provides financial services for banks and the U.S. government. It uses tools like setting interest rates, market operations, bank supervision, and payments services to influence credit, prices, and financial stability, operating through 12 regional banks and a Board in Washington. It is different from private banks because it is a public-mission institution with a nationwide mandate and a regional structure that blends national policy with local insight, not focused on profits. Its goal is to promote a strong economy and a stable financial system for the United States.

Midland Chamber partners with Federal Reserve to gather critical small business data.

Midland Chamber partners with Federal Reserve to gather critical small business data. By Odessa American, Odessa American, Texas The Tribune Content Agency Updated October 28, 2026 7:15 PM Gift Article MIDLAND Midland Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Federal Reserve System to draw responses to the 2026 Small Business Credit Survey, a nationwide effort to better understand the financial challenges and needs of America's small businesses. The annual survey, which runs through November 13, invites owners and key financial decision-makers of for-profit businesses to share their recent experiences with business conditions, financing, and their outlook for the future. The 12-minute confidential survey is open to businesses currently in operation, those recently closed, and those about to launch. The Small Business Credit Survey is conducted annually by all 12 Federal Reserve Banks and in conjunction with more than 100 not-for-profit partners, this year including Midland Chamber of Commerce. The resulting data inform federal government agencies, community development financial institutions, traditional lenders, and policymakers. Past survey findings have been cited in congressional testimony, used to design lending programs, and have helped shape small business support services. The survey is now open to for-profit businesses with fewer than 500 employees across all industries. Responses are completely confidential, and participants do not need to provide personal identifying information. The post Midland Chamber partners with Federal Reserve to gather critical small business data appeared first on Odessa American. This story was originally published October 28, 2026 at 7:05 PM.

The Fed's new headache: An AI boom that turns to bust.

The Fed's new headache: An AI boom that turns to bust. The stakes for the central bank are high, as Chair Kevin Warsh aims to cool inflation without wrecking the job market or causing financial turmoil. 10/28/2026 2:00 AM PDT |Updated: 10/28/2026 7:26 AM PDT Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh says artificial intelligence will ultimately provide a "huge benefit" to the economy. But a cooling off of investment in the skyrocketing technology might actually help him right now. The rapid construction of AI data centers across the nation is stoking inflation by juicing financial markets and creating shortages in electricity and construction. Yet it's also a massive engine for the economy, fueling spending by consumers enriched through rising stock prices and by businesses, which are pouring money into tech-related investments. That creates a dilemma for Fed policymakers: Raise interest rates too sharply to fight inflation and risk damaging a key driver of the economy. Move too slowly and risk entrenched inflation. But if the AI industry's growth were to moderate on its own, that would make it easier for the Fed to tame inflation. "The demand behind the AI build-out is so intense that it's putting pressure on the supply of goods and services that are needed to do the AI build-out," said Claudia Sahm, a former Fed staffer who is now chief economist at New Century Advisors. "So if that demand for the build-out just took a little bit of wind out of the sails, well, then maybe the production could catch up and we wouldn't have these bottlenecks."
